Think Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is just a placement quiz? Think again.

SSA is designed for students in Grades 1–8 who may be ready to move one grade level ahead in Math or ELA, while staying with their grade-level peers for other subjects.

But here’s the part many parents don’t realize:

The assessment covers the entire next grade’s curriculum.

Not one chapter.
Not a few sample topics.
The full year of content.

That’s why SSA preparation isn’t something you can realistically cram for a few weeks before the assessment. Families considering SSA need time to build mastery across the full next-grade curriculum.

And SSA isn’t automatically the right choice for every bright or advanced student. The goal should always be finding the right academic fit for your child.

Is your child losing SAT points because they don’t know the math — or because they’re taking too long? ⏱️

Try this:

3x + 7 = 22
What is 6x + 3?

Most students solve for x first.

But on a timed SAT, there’s a faster way. 👀

If 3x = 15, then 6x = 30.
Add 3 → 33.

No need to solve for x.

That’s the bigger SAT lesson: the content stops around Algebra 2, but knowing the math isn’t always enough. Pacing and efficient problem-solving matter too.

And the good news? Pacing can be trained.

Junior year is closer than it feels — and some important testing dates are coming up fast. 📅

If you have a junior at home, here are the dates you should know:

🔴 September 18 — Registration closes for the October 3 SAT
🟠 October 1–30 — PSAT/NMSQT is administered at school
🔵 October 23 — Registration closes for the November 7 SAT

And one detail parents often miss:

For National Merit, the junior-year PSAT score is the one that counts. There’s no retake.

The good news? You don’t need to figure out the entire testing plan at once. You just need to know what’s coming and when.

📅 Junior year testing season is closer than it feels.

If you have a high school junior at home, here are 3 dates worth putting on your calendar:

🔹 September 18 — Registration closes for the October 3 SAT
🔹 October 1–30 — PSAT/NMSQT is administered at school
🔹 October 23 — Registration closes for the November 7 SAT

And there’s one PSAT detail many families miss:

Only the junior-year PSAT score counts toward National Merit.
Sophomore year can be useful practice, but it doesn’t count for National Merit.

We’re not sharing this to create more stress. The goal is simply to make sure families know the timeline before a deadline passes.

The others are perfect cubes:

8 = 2³
27 = 3³
64 = 4³

Something many Wake County parents don’t know:

Third graders are screened for AIG automatically.

But for many 4th and 5th graders, a nomination is needed.

And here’s the part many parents don’t realize:

You can nominate your own child.

If your child finishes their work early…
If they consistently get good grades but don’t seem challenged…
If school is “fine,” but maybe a little too easy…

…it may be worth looking into.

Because doing fine and being appropriately challenged are not always the same thing.
