Acton Academy Columbus

Acton Academy Columbus Acton Academy is a secular, private, Montessori-inspired microschool in Dublin, Ohio where our Heroes work on self-paced, real-world challenges

What makes Acton unique as a private school? We incorporate many parts of a Montessori and Reggio Emilia education. In addition, there are so many other aspects of Acton that turn learning upside down:

- One-room schoolhouse

- Project Based Learning

- No homework

- No grades

- No report cards

- No lectures

- Blended learning

- ESTEAM (Entrepreneurship, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art

s, Math) Education

- Guides rather than teachers

- Focus on the 4 Cs (Critical thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity)

- Montessori principles to build independent learners

- Socratic discussions to develop critical thinking skills

- Personalized, self-paced, mastery-based learning

All of the above approaches to education are designed to give learners exposure to real-life skills. The Acton holistic approach focusing on learning to be, learning to do, and learning to learn. This leads to a much more fulfilling Hero’s journey and carves a path where learners find joy in learning which leads to lifelong learning. But what truly separates Acton is that we are a Learner-Driven school. Eagles drive their own learning vs. the traditional approach of Teacher / State led curriculum. What does that look like? It shows up in a lot of ways:

- Eagles lead the morning discussion

- Eagles set their own goals

- Self-paced core skills

- Peer-to-Peer learning

- Studio governance:

- Creating / abiding by a learner-generated contract

- Eagles determine how studio maintenance gets complete

Learner-Driven education aligns with the research behind raising a happy child. If you are interested in learning more about Acton and our approach, please reach out or set up a time for a tour.

Eagle-led initiative: Monday Morning Launch. 💙💚

Each Monday, Eagles gather for a little tea(m) time to connect, have fun, and start the week together.

They created it themselves as a way to build stronger friendships and a stronger studio community.

We love seeing learners take the lead in shaping the culture around them.

Montessori understood something powerful: children are capable of far more when they’re trusted to participate in their own learning. 💛

In our Spark Montessori Studio, that means hands-on work, meaningful choices, space to move at an individual pace, and plenty of room for curiosity.

The goal goes beyond finishing the lesson.

We want children to build the confidence and independence to know how to learn.

What if a child’s curiosity was treated as the beginning of learning?

At Acton, we pay attention to the questions learners keep asking, the topics they return to, and the ideas they want to explore more deeply.

That might look like a passion project sparked by a personal interest, a Montessori work chosen independently, or a question that leads the whole studio somewhere unexpected.

“Children learn out of interest and curiosity, and ought to be in control of their own learning.”
— John Holt

That is the kind of learning we want to protect: child-led, interest-driven, and full of genuine discovery. 💚

Sometimes the biggest signs of growth show up in the smallest moments. 💛

A learner saying, “I love Acton.”
Another confidently sharing that respectful disagreement is welcome.
An Eagle finishing their own job, then choosing to help someone else without being asked.

These are the moments that matter.

Confidence. Responsibility. Leadership. Community.

A pretty special way to start the week in Growth Studio. 🦅

Columbus, 2050. The challenge starts now. 🏙️🦅

Our Eagles have officially launched their Urban Planning Quest, stepping into the role of city planners tasked with designing a new district for the future.

Day one started with big questions, quick sketches, and a few surprises as learners uncovered the hidden systems that keep a city running.

As the Quest unfolds, learners will use math without computers, collaborate with planning firms, and tackle real-world problems—not just solve math problems or memorize facts. They’ll be designing, calculating, communicating, and making decisions that connect directly to the world around them.

Next up: bold ideas, real-world challenges, and a future Columbus they get to imagine from the ground up.

First week of school = time to build the tribe. 💚

Our Reggio Room learners at the Spark Studio (ages 4.5-7) kicked things off with a Free Association game and the Human Knot, giving them a fun way to connect, laugh, communicate, and get comfortable with one another.

These first-week moments help turn a group of learners into a community.

Go Spark! ✨

Director Spotlight: Meet Archna 💙💚

Archna is an optometrist, mother of three, and a firm believer that children grow when they are given space to try, make mistakes, and try again.

Her path into education began when she discovered Montessori philosophy during her first pregnancy. Years later, her family found Acton Academy Columbus, where she watched her son grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence.

Today, as the Assistant Director of Acton Academy Columbus, she brings together her experience as a parent, educator, and healthcare professional with one guiding belief: children are capable of so much when we give them room to grow. 💙

Your child deserves more than just getting through the school day.

More moments that make them wonder.
More chances to make meaningful choices.
More opportunities to discover what they can do.

School should be a place where confidence grows, curiosity stays alive, and learning feels worth showing up for.

Childhood is too important for “just getting through it.” 💛
