How Is Nectar Produced Inside a Plant?
Nectar is a sweet liquid produced by specialized glands called nectaries. It is not simply stored inside flowers—it is actively made by the plant through a complex biological process.
1. Photosynthesis Creates the Raw Material
The process begins in the leaves.
Leaves capture sunlight using chlorophyll.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air and water (H₂O) from the soil are converted into glucose (simple sugar) through photosynthesis.
This glucose is the main ingredient used to produce nectar.
2. Sugars Are Transported to the Flower
The glucose produced in the leaves is converted mainly into sucrose.
Sucrose travels through the plant's phloem (food-transport tissue).
It moves from the leaves to flowers, buds, or other nectar-producing organs.
3. Nectar Is Produced in Nectaries
Inside the flower are tiny glands called nectaries.
Nectary cells absorb the transported sugars.
They mix the sugars with water drawn from the plant.
Enzymes modify the sugar composition, producing a mixture of sucrose, glucose, and fructose.
Small amounts of amino acids, minerals, antioxidants, and aromatic compounds may also be added.
4. Nectar Is Secreted
The finished nectar is released onto the flower's surface.
It collects at the base of the flower or inside floral tubes.
This makes it easily accessible to pollinators such as honey bees, butterflies, birds, and other insects.
5. Why Plants Produce Nectar
Nectar is a reward for pollinators.
When bees visit flowers to collect nectar:
They accidentally transfer pollen between flowers.
This pollination allows plants to produce seeds and fruits.
In return, bees carry nectar back to the hive and convert it into honey.
