From July 30 through August 6, a group of 28 Bonner & Prendie students and faculty traveled to the Azores for an unforgettable experience focused on environmental tourism and Environmental Science in Action.
For the last three days of the trip, the group explored even more of what makes the Azores so unique. On Day 6, students visited Quinta do Agricular, where they learned about traditional farming practices, interacted with farm animals, and even had the opportunity to milk a dairy cow. They then traveled to Ribeira Grande, where students explored the town and beach, with some even taking it upon themselves to clean up trash along the shoreline. The day continued at Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Center and ended with a visit to Ceramica Vieira, the oldest ceramic factory in the Azores.
Day 7 brought the group to Lagoa das Furnas, where they learned about conservation efforts, volcanic activity, and the unique ecosystem surrounding the lake. Students visited the fumarolic fields, explored Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens, swam in the thermal pools of Furnas, and toured Chá Gorreana, one of Europe’s oldest tea plantations.
On the final day, the group headed home after a week filled with new experiences, environmental education, and memories that will last a lifetime.
