Utah Dyslexia Services

Utah Dyslexia Services I have provided free consulting services to parents of struggling readers for 6 years. All instruction will be simultaneous, multi-sensory instruction.

Scientific research recommends a Structured Literacy or Orton-Gillingham based system as the most effective way to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills. I am now going to add another prong and provide dyslexia screening and tutoring services. I have 6 years of experience tutoring and can provide references upon request. My approach is to avoid the traditional 2-dimensional teaching which

requires strong short-term memory skills, where dyslexics are notoriously weak. Instead, I teach students how to read and write without memorization and focus on their strong 3-dimensional visualization ability. I use hands-on practices, with several Orton-Gillingham/Structured Literacy based systems to improve phonemic awareness. Research has shown that dyslexic people who use all of their senses when they learn (visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic) are better able to store and retrieve the information. It is also important that instruction is direct and explicit.

Throughout the school year, it can be difficult to find an opening in our schedule. Summer is the perfect opportunity for us to fit you in. Summer tutoring can also prevent summer slide, ensuring your student is not wasting valuable time at school in the fall. Call or email us for available summer slots, beginning in June.

School starts this month. I use the Learning Ally Child Profile document to familiarize our new teachers with my kids before school starts. They love it and I love it.

As many of you know, the first case of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Tooele. I still plan to continue face to face tutoring. However, for those that are interested and have capabilities, I will be offering remote tutoring via Zoom. I will offer all first classes free, as there will be a learning curve for the student. Please feel free to message me any questions or concerns.

Addressing COVID-19 concerns, Tooele Dyslexia Services plans to continue with regularly scheduled tutoring appointments. Workspace areas will be cleaned every 30 minutes. If your student has a fever or cough, please keep them home. If any direct family members have a fever or cough, please keep your student home. I will contact parents as soon as possible, if there are any changes or cancellations. Thank you.
