Scientific research recommends a Structured Literacy or Orton-Gillingham based system as the most effective way to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills. I am now going to add another prong and provide dyslexia screening and tutoring services. I have 6 years of experience tutoring and can provide references upon request. My approach is to avoid the traditional 2-dimensional teaching which
requires strong short-term memory skills, where dyslexics are notoriously weak. Instead, I teach students how to read and write without memorization and focus on their strong 3-dimensional visualization ability. I use hands-on practices, with several Orton-Gillingham/Structured Literacy based systems to improve phonemic awareness. Research has shown that dyslexic people who use all of their senses when they learn (visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic) are better able to store and retrieve the information. It is also important that instruction is direct and explicit.
