Wow! Once again, this exercise has been amazing for my own writing and getting my creative juices flowing.
You may remember I said I planned to write more than just the first line. I decided to follow the feeling I got as I wrote.
I’ve had so much fun.
Not everyday was a success. I didn’t just sit down and write a page or two without really thinking about it. Some days, I pondered where in the novel this line might end up and sometimes I tried to find the best place to keep the line on that first page.
I wrote long enough that I felt interested in what I was working on.
Here’s why. Lots of times, in the beginning of a novel, we lose interest. I’ve met hundreds of people who have so many starts of novels they never finish.
Why? They lose interest. The story begins to feel stale to them. Remember you can’t revise a novel you never wrote. During revision, the boring parts will sing for you, with just a little bit of work. (Okay—it’s a TON of work. MORE than a ton of work!)
