What does “renewal” mean?

Chippewa Local Schools’ current 1% earned-income tax expires at the end of 2027.

The November 3 ballot issue asks voters whether to continue that same tax for another five years, beginning January 1, 2028.

There is no overlap, no additional 1% tax and no increase in the rate. A renewal simply continues the existing tax after its current term ends.

What is the 1% earned-income tax used for?

The official ballot language states that the revenue is for the current operating expenses of the school district.

In plain language, that means the regular costs of operating Chippewa Local Schools. These costs include salaries and benefits, purchased services, supplies and instructional materials.

The revenue is not restricted to one classroom, activity or program. It supports the district’s overall day-to-day operations.

The November 3 proposal renews this existing operating revenue for five years at the same 1% rate.

Is the tax rate changing?

No. The proposal renews Chippewa Local Schools’ existing earned-income tax at the same 1% rate.

At 1%, the tax equals:

• $10 annually for every $1,000 of taxable earned income
• $500 on $50,000 of taxable earned income
• $750 on $75,000 of taxable earned income

The tax has been in effect since 2008. The current term expires at the end of 2027, and the renewal would begin January 1, 2028. It does not create a second tax or increase the rate.

What does “earned income” mean?

Chippewa’s existing 1% school-district income tax applies to income earned through work. This generally includes wages, salaries, tips, commissions, other employee compensation and net earnings from self-employment.

It does not apply to every type of income. We will cover income that is generally excluded in our next tax-fact post.

The November 3 proposal renews the existing tax at the same 1% rate. It does not increase the rate.
