I’ve been lucky enough to own these beautiful electric and manual presses from Potter USA - Jewelry Tools for a while now, and honestly, I still don’t think I’ve scratched the surface of what they can do.

Most people think of a hydraulic press as a tool for making finished pieces of jewellery. I don’t.

I think of it as a tool for making **components**.

Embellishments for a bezel. A die-struck bail for a pendant. Bracelet forms. Elements that are saw pierced after pressing. Decorative details that become part of a much bigger design.

The possibilities are almost endless once you start thinking beyond the finished piece.

So here’s a challenge...

Why won’t my freeekin solder flow?!”

It’s a question I get asked ALL the time (and it used to drive me mad too when I was first starting out)...

It’s caused by a few really common (and easily fixable) mistakes.

But the problem is, when you’re teaching yourself this jewellery-making malarkey from home, ya don’t know what ya don’t know…

So when the solder ain’t flowing, it’s easy to feel like you’re slowly going insane.

Before you throw in the torch though, remember this:

Size matters (when soldering…)

You might simply be using a flame that’s too small for the job! Try adding a few extra inches and see if it helps get things going.

If that doesn’t work, I’ve packed my soldering Youtube video with some other common mistakes (and easy fixes), so you can prevent meltdowns, failing joins, ugly ass solder seams, loss of eyebrows and more.

Fusing Argentium is easier than you think.  But I know you’re already asking, can I fuse sterling, what about bronze, what if I want to mix metals???? 🤪

Everyone asks me for the bezel height number. Fine 😝: 0.5 to 1mm above where the stone starts to curve. Write it down if it makes you feel better... just know it’s a guide, not a rule, and in half of situations it’s totally irrelevant😓.

Here’s what actually works. Sit your stone in the bezel and look at the inside of the wall, right up against the stone. The base should be snug - no gap down there. But between the TOP of the wall and the stone, you want to clearly see a gap... and with a standard cabochon, the wall visible between the stone and the inside wall should be approximately 0.5 to 1mm. But remember, this is a guide. That bit of wall is the metal you’ll push over to hold your stone in place. Too short and it can’t be pushed over the stone. Too tall and you’ll end up with a crumpled bezel.

(This is standard cabochons, by the way. Bullet-tops, tablets and funny curves each play by their own rules - that’s a whole other conversation.)

And yes... you’ll still learn this by trial and error, whether you like it or not. Every stone curves differently. Your eye gets better every single time.

Ever stared straight at an obvious problem and just... not seen it? 🙋‍♀️

That was me with this double layered prong setting. My u-shaped prong trick was working a treat... right up until the solder joining the two layers reflowed and soldered my u-shapes shut. From BOTH sides. Buggery bo****ks.

So I did the only sensible thing. Swore like a trooper, took a nap, and came back for round two. This time it worked (double prongs do work great when placed correctly). And when an odd number of prongs meant (as we learnt we can't use the u-shape trick at all), we drilled right through and wedged them in nice and tight instead.

Swipe for the whole saga, fail and all 👉

Moral of the story: some days your brain just won't cooperate (menopause brain, I'm looking at you). Swear like a trooper, take a nap, try again.

If you want to see Poppy’s before pictures swipe to the end. Now here’s the story about how I didn’t want to end up with a new pupper so soon after moving to Chiang Mai, but I got one anyway.

I was sitting at my favorite bar in CM having a soda water the Saturday before last - it was lunch time, so yes it was a soda 🤣. This little scraggly gray pooch was getting shooed off from the hotel front porch next door. That’s when I saw she was limping pretty bad. So I called her over to the pub and ordered her chicken and rice and eggs. But the poor little thing as skinny as she was didn’t eat.

She just wanted a quiet corner to lay down in away from people. So we found her a spot, and I thought I’ll just go get her some flea treatment from up the road. I left her at the pub sleeping, but then on the way back my husband Shaun Terence Teo was half way to the shop too - trailing behind the pupper who was trying (not very successfully to follow me). But it wasn’t just her bad leg, she clearly had no sense of the traffic and was just so weak. With no lead we struggled to keep her out of the way of cars…. Most Thai street dogs are smart enough to do that for themselves, but not this one. And so that is when she became “our Poppy”. We called the vetbulance and it turned up 10 minutes later and took her and me to the vets.

The vet looked at me with suspicion - as if to say you had better not think we’re a street dog charity you crazy foreigner! (Chiang mai has tonnes of street dogs all in need of a little TLC) - so I totally got it. But I paid her bill and left her boarding there so they could treat her every day - there was a lot wrong with this little ragamuffin. But I promised to come back, and keep paying the bills.

Sooooo - pick up day is tomorrow, and it looks like we have a new dog 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Now I just need to buy a car to get this little princess Poppy to and from the studio every day.

I’m a sucker, but she’s too beautiful. I didn’t know that when I found her though - if you swipe to the end, you’ll see what I mean 😢

Texture is incredible. But it’s easy to get carried away with those rolling mill texture plates sometimes. You know the ones that I mean - with floral or scroll patterns that take over the whole design.

While these kind of textures can work beautifully, they don’t work with everything, and in our case the wavey organic pattern created on our ring band feels confusing when combined with the sharp geometric stone and setting. When it comes to textures, if in doubt - keep it simple. And one of my favorite textures for this is the simple stippled effect created by a hammer handpiece.
