I absolutely loved hearing Emma Allee’s recital rehearsal today. Her repertoire is gorgeous and suits her so well. This is going to be a beautiful senior recital. .allee

Five years ago I posted the following photo and text on Facebook. Since then I have run and published a study on mindfulness in people with voice disorders and have presented on the subject for audiences across the country and around the world. I have taught mindfulness classes to over 100 people with voice disorders. I think I’ve accomplished a lot in half a decade — and there’s more to come!

REPOST: This beautiful pile of books represents so much of what I love about my work as a voice instructor and my training as a mindfulness teacher.

I’m delving into these as preparation for a project with the working title: “Mindfulness and Voice: A Review of Literature Regarding Mindfulness in Vocal Training, including Singing Voice Training, Speaking/Acting Voice Training, and Voice Therapy for Patients with Voice Disorders.”

There is very little literature on the subject, and I think someone needs to study whether a structured mindfulness program can help alleviate stress or anxiety (generalized or performance) in singers and people with voice disorders.

My lovely voice student Emma Allee .allee will be performing her senior recital in April. This is my first time overseeing an academic recital, so it will be a wonderful first for both of us. It’s an incredible program of vocal music.

It’s always a pleasure to find my work cited by other researchers. I enjoyed reading Geneva Mayne’s article, “Associations Between Social Determinants of Health, Mental Effort, and Frustration for Voice Therapy.” See slide 2 for mention of my study (reference 59).
