Engineers just made a tough choice but it will extend the voyager mission by one additional year.

Just yesterday April 17 2026 engineers at NASA sent a command across 15 billion miles of space to shut down the Low-energy Charged Particles (LECP) instrument on Voyager 1. This instrument has been running almost non-stop since 1977 helping us understand the strange environment outside our suns protective bubble. But with the spacecrafts nuclear power supply dropping by about 4 watts every year NASA had to make a tough choice to prevent a total power failure. By turning off the LECP engineers have bought the legendary probe about another year of "breathing room" to continue its journey through interstellar space.

Even though it is losing its senses one by one Voyager 1 isn't done yet. It still has two active instruments—one for measuring magnetic fields and one for listening to plasma waves—that are sending back data from a region of the galaxy no other human made object has ever reached. NASA is also planning a risky move called the Big Bang later this summer to swap out old components for lower power alternatives. Every day we get from Voyager 1 now is a gift as we watch humanity's farthest scout drift toward its next big milestone: reaching a full light-day away from home later this year 🌌

We love seeing FIRST teams showing off their robots. Even better when it shows up on the feeds of other outlets.

Pictures from our scrimmage this past weekend at Battle Below the Canal.

A respectable second place finish for the team.
