Our Atlas fellows have been keeping busy this summer, with some students even working full-time to help lead their campus towards zero waste! Between some well-deserved rest from the academic year and time outside, fellows from six different campuses have been connecting with stakeholders, conducting bin audits, assessing surplus property management, and expanding reusable to-go container systems. ☀🌱

Summer is off to a strong start with 5 campus visits! After attending the Northeast Campus Sustainability Consortium at Rutgers University alongside many of our longtime campus partners, we traveled across the Northeast to learn more about ongoing zero-waste initiatives at Hunter College and Princeton University, and to connect with our summer student fellows at Bowdoin and Williams College. 🌞

Still seeking an internship for next year? Want to be paid to receive mentorship, train up on organizing skills, and advocate for Environmental Justice on your campus? Apply for our Students Taking on Oil and Petrochemicals (STOP) Fellowship cohort!

COHORT DETAILS:
The Students Taking on Oil and Petrochemicals (STOP) Fellowship is a fully remote with in-person opportunities, paid, annual fellowship running from September 2026 thru April 2027, that supports students with taking action against the petrochemical industry in their communities. This is the 7th year of the STOP Fellowship. Our goals include:
1. Support young people at critical petrochemical “site fight” locations in organizing for a better future and finding their place in it.
2. Connect and align students with campus resources to the movement against petrochemicals and plastic.
3. Resource students to organize both on-campus & off-campus to disrupt the petrochemical & plastic industry.
4. Build long-lasting, mutually-beneficial relationships between student-led groups in campuses and grassroots organizations.
5. Uplift young people and their voices into the fight against petrochemicals and climate change.

During this fellowship, you will:
* Be paired with a movement leader for 1-on-1 mentorship and to collaborate on work related to your assigned site fight.
* Develop a narrative story of self related to this work.
* Train up on basic organizing skills, such as facilitation and team-building.
* Research and learn about petrochemical infrastructure in your region.
* Meet and build relationships with community leaders.
* Be in community with other students that attend schools near site fight locations and are passionate about disrupting the petrochemical industry, via required 2-hour weekly meetings.
* Complete a series of “quests” that align with the fellowship curriculum.

The PLAN team recently visited Atlas Stage 3 campus, Northern Illinois University, for a four-day visit to explore campus facilities, meet with campus stakeholders and administration, and brainstorm opportunities with the three student fellows leading the project. While in Illinois, they also visited Loyola University and DePaul University in Chicago to learn more about their unique programs! 🌟
