With the last group of students in the Indian River and Cape Henlopen school districts returning for their first day of school today, every district and charter school in Delaware is now back in session for the 2026-2027 school year!

DSEA would like to take a moment to welcome back the union educators who will transport, feed, coach, counsel, care for, and teach close to 140,000 students every single work day over the next 9 months – as well as the school secretaries, custodians, and other school staff who work all year round to keep our schools running smoothly.

Public school educators deserve our gratitude. They deserve our respect. And they deserve fair wages, safe working conditions, smaller class sizes, and fully funded schools.

Are you an active union educator working in New Castle or Kent counties? Are you looking to play a bigger role in the Delaware State Education Association?

The 36-member DSEA Executive Board – the main governing body of our union – is currently seeking candidates interested in filling three vacant seats representing New Castle County and one vacant seat representing Kent County.

Anyone interested in serving on the DSEA Executive Board as a representative from New Castle and Kent counties can send a letter of interest by mailing DSEA President Tameka Mays at 136 E. Water St., Dover, DE, 19901 by Monday, September 14.

Letters of interest also can be emailed to [email protected].

The Executive Board will vote to fill the vacant seats from the pool of applicants on Thursday, September 24. New Executive Board members selected to fill the vacant seats from New Castle and Kent counties will serve from September 24, 2026, to August 31, 2027, per the DSEA Bylaws.

ICYMI: As the new school year gets underway, U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester recently sat down with school social workers and other union educators from across Delaware to talk about the challenges our members and our students are experiencing every day.

The conversation covered student and educator mental health, housing instability, food insecurity and even access to hygiene resources, along with other factors that directly impact student outcomes.

As someone who comes from a family of social workers, Sen. Blunt Rochester understands just how important, rewarding and challenging the job can be for our school social workers.

EVERY child has a right to a free, public education – regardless of their immigration status.

That’s the position of our union. That’s the law in the United States of America.

Yet, the Trump Administration’s sudden decision to revoke a decades-old policy barring ICE from arresting students and their families in public schools, churches, and hospitals sent shockwaves of terror through our communities.

As a result, many law-abiding Delaware families have kept their children home rather than risk ICE showing up at their local bus stop or neighborhood school.

That’s why DSEA partnered with ACLU of Delaware and more than two dozen other community groups to advocate for legislation that prevents local police agencies from helping ICE conduct immigration enforcement at our schools, churches, and hospitals.

Signed into law today by Governor Matt Meyer, House Bill 94 (S) will not impact SROs or school constables. Neither will it stop local police from responding to a school emergency.

Instead, this legislation will help restore trust, protect our students, and stop ICE from diverting local resources away from the programs that actually keep our communities safe.

Thank you to bill sponsors Rep. Sean Lynn and Sen. Kyra Hoffner for working to protect all Delaware students. Thank you to state lawmakers for putting the welfare of our students ahead of national politics. And thank you to all of the union educators and concerned Delawareans who worked so hard over the last year to keep our schools and our students safe from harm.

HUGE WIN FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION:

Every student deserves an opportunity to succeed – no matter where they live or how much their families earn.

And with Governor Matt Meyer’s signature today on Senate Bill 302, we took a big leap forward in our fight to fix Delaware’s antiquated and inequitable education funding system.

Largely frozen in time since the Eisenhower Administration, the formula that determines how state tax dollars flow to our local schools has become outdated, opaque, and overburdened by a patchwork of piecemeal fixes that are failing to deliver results for our students, our schools, and our communities.

Senate Bill 302 represents Delaware’s first major reform to that system in 80 years – long-overdue changes that will finally allow school districts and charter schools to better allocate the state funding that makes up roughly 60% of their annual budgets.

Based on recommendations from the Public Education Funding Commission, SB 302 lays the foundation for the equitable funding framework our schools need to achieve real gains in the classroom, while delivering the accountability and transparency our communities need to rebuild their trust in our public schools.

While our work is far from complete, today marks a crucial turning point in the fight to create a public education system that supports every student.

Thank you to Sen. Laura Sturgeon and Rep. Kim Williams for your leadership. Thank you to the union educators, parents, lawmakers and education finance experts on the PEFC for your advocacy. Thank you to every single Democrat and Republican in the House and Senate for voting yes on SB 302.
