Id like to congratulate Kohlert for making a truly convoluted register mechanism. In other news, I’m calling this done… which means I have a fully playing Czechoslovakian bass clarinet and am VERY excited about it!

One more class picture to mark this occasion: two working bassoon reeds and FOUR working oboe reeds. I ordered backup oboe reeds, fully expecting most of these would be unusable practice reeds, and maybe that was the trick? I like the reeds I ordered but these are good too, and now my students and I will have many options.

Made up a promising set of reed blanks today… my bassoon reeds turn out pretty reliably but this is the first time I’m prepping for a student and not just me so the stakes feel a little higher. This is the best my oboe reeds have ever looked at this phase and I’m pleased to have experienced a couple skills clicking into place for the very first time so I feel really good about their chances. Hopefully I don’t wreck them as work proceeds!

Have you ever opened a case and felt way more glee than was really appropriate? Because let me tell you what, I have. This vintage C Melody sax is about a hundred years old, and with a little help I restored it (and its case, which still needs a replacement handle but that’s the easy part)… not quite the gravity of a semiquincentennial, but it makes me excited in a way that tingles my toes. These obsolete instruments were made for very different times than the ones we live in, and each one feels like a love letter from the past… wonderful and unique in a way we’re unaccustomed to in the 21st century. Learning to restore these beauties is giving me a lot more joy than I anticipated.

It has come to my attention that most folks go on vacation without either an alto clarinet or a spinning wheel. They don’t know what they’re missing.
