Charles River School

Charles River School CRS is an independent coeducational day school in Dover, MA for students in Pre-Kindergarten to Grade At CRS, progressive education is the tradition.

Charles River School students use intellect, experience, and optimism to see what’s possible. Through observing, hypothesizing, investigating, and revising they solve problems and ask new questions. Our students learn to use both inquiry and creativity to build practical skills, discover new interests and take responsibility for themselves, their communities, and the future. Our students explore d

ifferent angles and think through disciplines by way of real-world themes and hands-on projects. This has a profound effect on what they learn since they understand the “why.” We seamlessly connect knowledge, wonder, and outcomes to drive high engagement every day and eager anticipation for what’s to come.

With a fresh new school year coming soon, Head of School Gabe Burnstein shared his reflections in a letter to families.

"Riding my bike with friends in the heat, already sticky hot at 9 in the morning, my destination was undecided. My family had no idea where I was or what time I was coming home, and it was awesome. I was with my friends, and I was free. This was also completely normal.

In these moments, for ten-year-old me, it felt like summer would last forever. Even in early August, school was a thousand years away. I had so many cannonballs left at the Central Middle School pool. There were so many fireflies to try and catch, so many Matt Christopher books left to read (IFKYK), and so many nights where my sister and I stayed up covering our mouths because we were laughing so hard and didn’t want to wake our parents. We were in sleeping bags on their bedroom floor (my father called us “rug rats”) because their room was the only one in the house with air conditioning. And while my back hurts just thinking about sleeping on the floor now, it felt special then because we only did this on those extra hot summer nights smack dab in the middle of a Michigan summer.

Time really did move differently in summer as a child. And it lasted longer.

And I know what you’re thinking: Like my son Moses who has recently taken to saying, “Okay, Grandpa,” when I tell a story from the 1980’s, what does any of this have to do with, like, modernity? You’re thinking that I might as well be describing the 1880’s when looking at childhood through a 2026 lens.

But in childhood, summer always has the potential for magic. Time still operates differently when you are four or eight or thirteen, and children feel older and like different people when they arrive back at school in September, because they are!"

Jake Nemeroff, Grades 7 & 8 English Language Arts Teacher and Sarah Clancy, Grades 3–5 Public Speaking and Grades 7 & 8 Multi-Arts Teacher are planning this summer for an exciting co-taught Shakespeare unit for grade 8 students this coming school year.

The unit will bring Shakespeare to life through reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream in ELA, translating the play into more modern language, and acting out scenes.

Sarah and Jake are also excited to collaborate with Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. They’ll participate in a teaching workshop and welcome Trinity Repertory actors to CRS for student workshops later this year.

We can’t wait to see where this collaboration takes our students!

School may be out for summer, but learning is in full swing for our team! CRS faculty and staff have been busy collaborating on curriculum, attending conferences and professional development, strengthening teaching teams, and preparing for an incredible school year ahead.

From the National Children & Youth Gardening Symposium in California to Orton-Gillingham training at The Carroll School, the Institute for Administrators of Color, the Excelle Powering Women Conference, curriculum planning, and new teaching team collaboration—our lifelong learners are investing in their growth and are really excited to see students in September.

📬 Hi, Otters! Keep an eye on your mailbox this summer!

Associate Head of School Ms. Fogg has written a special postcard to every CRS student and dropped them at the post office today. Each note was written with a specific child in mind, asking about summer adventures, sharing new book recommendations, or simply letting them know how much they're missed.

At CRS, every student deserves to Be Known. 💙💛

Last week, we shared a close-up look at our pollinator garden within the CRS Community Garden. This week, we present the veggies! 🥕🥒 🍅🥦🫛

Fun fact: In the 2025-2026 school year, we grew, harvested, and donated over 300 pounds of produce to the Medfield Food Cupboard and the Dover Council on Aging! We are excited to continue and expand our community partnerships this summer and fall.

🌱 CALL FOR GARDEN VOLUNTEERS: CRS families and friends, we'd love your help! Volunteers are welcomed on Tuesday mornings throughout the summer to w**d, harvest, and prepare fresh vegetables from the garden. Sign up using the link below or email Lisa Balazs, Grade 7 and 8 Science Teacher, at [email protected].
