Charles River School CRS is an independent coeducational day school in Dover, MA for students in Pre-Kindergarten to Grade At CRS, progressive education is the tradition.

Charles River School students use intellect, experience, and optimism to see what’s possible. Through observing, hypothesizing, investigating, and revising they solve problems and ask new questions. Our students learn to use both inquiry and creativity to build practical skills, discover new interests and take responsibility for themselves, their communities, and the future. Our students explore different angles and think through disciplines by way of real-world themes and hands-on projects. This has a profound effect on what they learn since they understand the “why.” We seamlessly connect knowledge, wonder, and outcomes to drive high engagement every day and eager anticipation for what’s to come.

The countdown is on! We are just over 1 week away from the CRS Fair, a favorite community event for over 50 years.

Join us next Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for an afternoon of fun, games, and community!

This week, we were thrilled to welcome Trinity Repertory Company to CRS to collaborate with seventh and eighth graders as part of our new Shakespeare unit, co-taught by CRS teachers Jake Nemeroff and Sarah Clancy. After participating in a teaching workshop, Jake and Sarah joined students for an engaging, hands-on experience bringing Shakespeare to life through improvisation. Students enthusiastically acted out scenes, including a fast-paced reenactment of A Midsummer Night’s Dream!

Academic excellence meets joy of childhood in the tech room! Sixth-grade engineers took creativity and problem-solving to new heights today! ✈️ Using LEGO’s new Computer Science and AI robotics kits, students collaborated on a Supplies from the Skies unit in small groups to build and develop the code sequence for their own airplanes. The excitement took off as their creations successfully delivered packages and traveled across the classroom!

Third graders hit the halls for their annual Visual Communication Scavenger Hunt as part of Communication-Presentation class. Students explored campus in search of signs, symbols, and other visual clues that help us share information and understand the world around us. From first-aid symbols to library genre signs, students discovered how much we can communicate visually!

As part of Communication-Presentation class, students in third grade explore five styles of communication: verbal, nonverbal, listening, writing, and visual. Through skill-building activities and performance opportunities, students learn to recognize and understand the many ways we communicate with one another. The course also introduces foundational performance and public speaking skills, including healthy vocal support and projection, and using tone, volume, pitch, expression, and pace to communicate effectively.

A peek into a hands-on PreK interdisciplinary lesson combining math, language arts, and art! 🍂

Students explored campus to collect beautiful fall leaves before reading Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert together. Then, in small groups, they sorted their leaves by a variety of categories, including size, color, texture, and number. Finally, they used their collections to create art inspired by the book including a turkey and a cat.

We’ve made it to the sixth week of the school year! 🎉 To celebrate our incredible faculty and staff, the leadership team planned a surprise during our faculty meeting.

The celebration was especially meaningful after the work our faculty and staff did together over the summer around the Responsive Classroom framework—including reading The First Six Weeks of School and participating in a day-long workshop focused on creating Responsive Classrooms at CRS. That work continues to shape how we create calm, connected, curious, and well-managed learning environments where everyone can thrive.

Six weeks in, there’s so much to celebrate—from the routines and expectations teachers have established to the relationships they’ve built and the sense of belonging they’re creating in their classrooms. Faculty reflected on what’s working: interactive modeling, intentional use of materials, clear routines, and sharing the “why” behind classroom systems, to name a few.

We’re grateful for the care, steadiness, creativity, and good judgment our faculty bring to their work every day. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re really glad to celebrate you!

Earlier this week, our third graders traveled to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to deepen their classroom learning about Italy and the Silk Routes. It was a wonderful day of observation, exploration, and hands-on learning as students made connections between what they’ve studied and the art and objects around them. Thank you to our chaperones for joining us and helping make the day so special!
