I have been a CASA for 15 years this month and there has never been a more URGENT time in KENT COUNTY DELAWARE.

Urgent Need for CASA Volunteers

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (CASA) of Delaware is expanding its efforts to advocate for abused and neglected children. The number of children entering foster care continues to increase daily. The CASA Delaware program needs additional 200 volunteers to help advocate for these vulnerable children, and to ensure each child has a CASA volunteer by their side.
Currently, CASA Delaware only represents 50% of the children in foster care. Research shows that children with a CASA volunteer to advocate for them are:
Less likely to re-enter foster care.
More likely to find a safe, permanent home, spending less time in foster care.
More likely to perform better in school.

CASA volunteers are trained members of the community who are appointed by a Family Court Judge to be a voice for Delaware’s abused and neglected children. CASAs have varied professional, educational, and ethnic backgrounds. They are selected based on their objectivity, competence, and commitment. Each volunteer accepted into the program must complete 30 hours of initial training. Each CASA volunteer is supported by a CASA Program Coordinator and a Child Attorney to advocate for the best interests of children.

The problems of child abuse and neglect belong to all of us.

Our 2020-2021 calendar has been updated due to the COVID pandemic. The first day of school for students will be September 8th, 2020. Please visit http://bit.ly/csdreopeningcalendar or https://www.capital.k12.de.us/calendar to quickly access the revised calendar. Teachers and staff will begin professional learning and planning on August 25. After much deliberation and consultation with our Board of Education, along with guidance from the state, we will embrace a “safety first” approach to learning this fall.

The Capital School District will begin the school year using a full remote learning model for the first 6 weeks of school. Our reopening teams will continue to collaborate to support teaching and learning providing the best possible education for our Senators as they learn from home. We will be supporting students without devices for learning at home and assisting families who need internet access. More detailed plans will be forthcoming on our Senator remote learning plan.

Due to the incredible response, our parent surveys are still open and will remain open until Wednesday, August 12th to ensure that every family has the opportunity to submit a response. Printed surveys for families are also available at the district office. Please complete the survey to ensure that your needs are considered.

I want to thank all the parents, staff and community members that have reached out to me during the course of the summer. We know our students are best served in the classroom with our teachers. However, until we are able to return safely to the school building, we will ensure that every child has access to a high quality at home program.

Information about the opening of school for Capital School District

Capital students to start school year at home Sept. 8 The school board will meet Oct. 20 to reevaluate the possibility of returning to schools for at least some in-person learning.

Good evening, this is Dr. Sylvia Henderson, Interim Superintendent of the Capital School District with 4 important announcements:

First and foremost, we hope everyone is safe from tropical storm Isaias that moved through our Dover area and vicinity earlier today. We are thinking of you and hope you are well. We wanted to inform you William Henry Middle School sustained some damage from the storm and has been deemed unsafe by the City of Dover Fire Marshall. This means that the building will be closed until further notice. We remain committed to preserving our historic building and will keep you updated throughout the summer.

Next, Governor Carney announced today that Delaware schools can open with a hybrid model next month which means a mix of in-person and remote instruction. The District continues to work closely with the Division of Public Health to ensure that we are following all appropriate safety precautions and guidelines. Our reopening committees continue to meet. We will be presenting a revised calendar to the Board of Education for approval on Thursday evening and more detailed plans will be forthcoming.

Vision to Learn exams will not be held at William Henry tomorrow and will be rescheduled. Lastly, our food service delivery will resume tomorrow.
