John Bapst HS had a special visitor in the orchestra room last Friday!

JB was thrilled to welcome Dr. Nash Ryder to their orchestra rehearsal on Friday. Dr. Ryder, a Cherryfield, Maine native, is Professor of Violin at Florida Gulf Coast University and Concertmaster of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra.

Senior Julian Jeon is performing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra this semester, a highly virtuosic piece he has been working on for two months. Dr. Ryder showed Julian how a concerto soloist communicates with an orchestra through gestures, and how to get the most out of the music by leaning into the story the piece tells and drawing on the emotions behind it. He also coached the rest of the orchestra to play with more feeling and power.

Moments like this are what make JB Instrumental Music program so special. Thank you, Dr. Ryder, for sharing your time and talent with JB Crusaders, and thank you to Mr. Richmond for making it happen. We can’t wait to hear Julian and the orchestra bring this concerto to the stage!

Congratulations to our Liana Yeo, who attends Foxcroft Academy, and had a great day on the golf course yesterday. She shot a 97 over 18 holes at the 2026 Penobscot Valley Conference Championship meet which qualified her for the Class B Girls State meet next weekend, Saturday, October 10th, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, Maine. It's a great honor for her, and we are proud to celebrate it with her. Congrats, Liana! We'll see her next week at the state competition!

Yale Comes to John Bapst! 💜

Last Friday, John Bapst welcomed Aminah Praileau, Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, to campus. Interest in her session was so strong that we moved it from the Guidance Office to the library to make room for everyone!

With Julia Scarano ‘26 now studying at Yale, excitement runs high on both sides of the John Bapst and Yale connection. John Bapst students enjoyed Aminah’s presentation, and we were thrilled to have her with us.

Our CEO Jay Brennan, at age 76 has decided to go back to school - at least for one course! The course is on the neuroscience of leadership. Jay is particularly interested in understanding how the brain functions in moments of crisis or grief and how and in what ways it impacts one’s ability to lead.

John Bapst Memorial High School Chef Hannah Day prepared another one of her amazing international dishes, a Bibimbap dinner. This is a popular Korean dish featuring seasoned vegetables, marinated beef, rice, and a perfectly prepared egg — bringing students together for an authentic international dining experience. Meals like these reflect the diversity of the John Bapst boarding community and provide students with opportunities to explore cultures through food while sharing meaningful conversations with films from around the world.
