KMMS STEM Zone Welcome to the Kettle Moraine Middle School STEM Zone page! This page showcases student learning and designs. Any questions, please contact Mr.

STEM is science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. At Kettle Moraine Middle School all girls and boys are involved with STEM learning during 6th and 7th grade while STEM related electives in 8th grade are electives. The design process is at the core of this learning and results in significant problem solving experience for students. This "KMMS STEM Zone" page has the purpose of showcasing student learning and design related to STEM. Gutbrod: [email protected]

Michael at the end of the 20-21 school year designed and made this infinity mirror. A hole in the bottom allows a cellphone flashlight to shine into it. He used the laser cutter to design and make the hunting figure out of glowing orange plexiglass.

In lieu of an in-person review of this year’s incredible STEM projects, we would like to honor the 7th grade upcycling project winners. Students worked hard over a 6 week period to create a product that reuses materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. The project included studying the lifecycle of materials, brainstorming the use of these materials, creating a product plan, drawing a blueprint to scale, and then creating the final product. The student groups presented their product in front of a “shark tank” of students from HS^2 high school. Congratulations to the winning teams in the categories of product presentation and complexity of product.

Last Thursday and Friday, the 7th grade STEM students presented their upcycled projects to a Shark Tank of judges from HS^2. The students embarked on a challenge to upcycle materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. They persevered safely in their building projects and produced some beautiful products that the judges were incredibly impressed with. Way to go 7th graders! Keep the positive attitude and creative thinking going during your virtual days!

7th grade build challenge is underway! They’ve studied the lifecycle of plastic and are now applying that to other materials. They are creating an upcycled product to avoid those materials from going to the landfill. Quite inspiring!
