Arbor Station Elementary School fifth graders in Paris Morgan’s science class have been busy with some engaging, hands-on activities using the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework.

One activity involved investigating how water temperature affects the rate at which Skittles dissolve. They tested Skittles in cold and warm water, measured dissolving times, analyzed the data, and used their findings to develop claims supported by scientific evidence and reasoning.

CER trains students to think like scientists. It is an effective way to frame the workflow of questioning through experimentation, evidence and explanation. Students begin to think about how evidence supports their claims and how to explain their findings. All of these are key components of critical thinking.

Two South Douglas Elementary School DCSS GA students are receiving national recognition after their podcast was named a winner in National Public Radio’s America 250 Student Podcast Challenge.

Fourth-graders Travis Bozeman and Oliver Heering earned national recognition for their podcast, "Researching the Underground Railroad." The project explored the history of the Underground Railroad and the courageous journeys of enslaved people seeking freedom. As part of their research, the students conducted an interview with a subject-matter expert and turned what they learned into a compelling podcast that impressed judges nationwide.

Thomas Bruno, fourth-grade reading teacher at South Douglas Elementary, said the students gained valuable knowledge and experiences throughout the challenge.

“The kids learned so much,” Bruno said. “They read “Who Was?” books about famous Americans and important American landmarks. They were so excited to meet and interview experts from across the country, including historians and rangers from the White House, Mount Rushmore, the Underground Railroad Museum and Grant’s Tomb.”

The 2026 Douglas County Loves Literacy Summer Reading Challenge wrapped up with the community topping its goal. Over the course of the challenge, Douglas County students, families, and residents logged 3,472,877 minutes of reading, exceeding the original 3 million-minute target by nearly 473,000 minutes.

The challenge ran from May 16 through July 31 as a partnership between the Douglas County School System, the City of Douglasville, Douglas County government and the West Georgia Regional Library System. Readers tracked their progress through the Beanstack platform, with reading thermometers on display at the Dog River Library, the Lithia Springs Library and the DCSS Central Office.

"Our community didn't just meet the goal, we exceeded it in a big way," said Patti Sullivan, DCSS Family Engagement Coordinator. "Every logged minute represented a family that chose to read together, and that's what made this summer special."

Superintendent Dr. Trent North said the final total reflects a community fully invested in its students.

"More than 3.4 million minutes tells you everything about who we are as a community," North said. "Douglas County shows up for its readers, and this summer proved it again."

New Manchester Jaguars is coming off back-to-back eight-win seasons in 2024 and 2025 — both school records — that have signaled to the rest of the state that the Jaguars are a force to be reckoned with.

While the Jaguars lost key starters from those squads — including quarterback DJ Alexander, who won the Howard Thompson Award as the county's top senior football player and is now playing at Florida International, and offensive lineman Donald Akhibi, who's now playing at Florida State — fourth-year head football coach Olten Downs said this year's group has been "closer" and "hungrier."

Downs highlighted four key veterans: senior tight end Adrian Guilford and senior defensive backs Dontae Moore, Marley Thomas and Joshua Williams.

"This group, they've got the ability to take it to the next level," Downs said at the recent DCSS Media Day.

The Jaguars open the season at home tonight against Mays in a non-region contest.

Erin Johnson has set the bar high for the gymnastics program at Robert S Alexander High School.

The junior won the beam at the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA Gymnastics State Championship in April.

During an Aug. 14 halftime ceremony, she received her state championship ring at the Cougars' football scrimmage against Starr's Mill.

"Becoming a State Champion and having the honor of representing AHS is an accomplishment that I will cherish forever," said Johnson, who is also a varsity cheerleader at Alexander. "What better way to have a State Championship Ring Ceremony than under Friday Night Lights where I am cheering on the Cougars Football team and having my family and community cheering me on at the same time!

"Everyone's love, encouragement, support, and presence meant so much to me. I will continue to represent AHS with pride knowing that this ring represents more than a championship, it represents the resilience, hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance it took me to earn it."

🗓️ Reminder: Parent Power Summit Taking Place Friday and Saturday

The Parent Power Summit is bringing families, educators, students and community leaders together Friday, Aug. 21, and Saturday, Aug. 22, to learn, connect and build better together.

The community initiative is taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County School System's Central Office.

"Stronger communities are developed when families are informed, engaged and empowered," said Jamilia Smith with AKT Unlimited, which is producing the Summit alongside Leslie Nelson of Pivotal Connections, LLC, Tai Cochran of herPM and Jasmine Moore of Grateful Hands Inc.

The Douglas County School System, Royal Accents LLC, Google and Miss West GA Scholarship Competition are all sponsors.

Sessions include:
• IEP and 504 Plans: The Transition from High School to Beyond
• Identifying and Aligning Personal Values to Lead Our Families
• Autism Awareness Conversation
