My child memorizes books but can't read new ones

Does your first grader seem to "read" their favorite book perfectly but struggles with a brand-new book?

Many children are memorizing stories instead of using letter sounds and decoding skills. As books become more challenging in first grade, memorization is no longer enough, and frustration can quickly replace confidence.

Did You Know?

Knowing the ABCs and knowing the sounds each letter makes are two very different skills.

Children who quickly recognize letter sounds have a much easier time learning to read because they can connect sounds together to make words.

Did You Know?
Before children become strong readers, they need to hear and work with the individual sounds in words.

For example:
What word do you get if you remove the /c/ from cat?
Children who can hear, separate, and manipulate sounds often find learning to read much easier.

🤔 Ask Yourself...
Can your child clap the sounds in simple words or tell you the first sound they hear in a word?
