Douglas County Parents:

The Conversation That Can Change the School Year

šŸŽ’ Sneak-a-Peek is almost here!

Most families spend their time finding classrooms, dropping off supplies, and meeting teachers.
But one short conversation with your child's teacher can help set the tone for the entire school year.

That's why I created this FREE FLOW Family Sneak-a-Peek Question Guide to help parents have meaningful conversations from Day One.

šŸ“Œ Save this guide to your phone before you head to school!

If you'd also like to know where your child is starting this school year, I'd love to help.

My child memorizes books but can't read new ones

Does your first grader seem to "read" their favorite book perfectly but struggles with a brand-new book?

Many children are memorizing stories instead of using letter sounds and decoding skills. As books become more challenging in first grade, memorization is no longer enough, and frustration can quickly replace confidence.

Strong readers are built by mastering the foundational skills that unlock any book—not just familiar ones.

If you're wondering whether your child is on track, I'd be happy to answer your questions. Schedule a free Let's Chat conversation through my Calendly link.

Did You Know?

Knowing the ABCs and knowing the sounds each letter makes are two very different skills.

Children who quickly recognize letter sounds have a much easier time learning to read because they can connect sounds together to make words.

šŸ¤” Ask Yourself...

If you point to a random letter, can your child quickly tell you its sound without hesitation?

If you're unsure whether your child is building a strong reading foundation, let's chat! I'd be happy to answer your questions and help you determine the next best step. 770-675-6311 or [email protected] or DM

Did You Know?
Before children become strong readers, they need to hear and work with the individual sounds in words.

For example:
What word do you get if you remove the /c/ from cat?
Children who can hear, separate, and manipulate sounds often find learning to read much easier.

šŸ¤” Ask Yourself...
Can your child clap the sounds in simple words or tell you the first sound they hear in a word?

Strong reading starts long before children read books independently. If you'd like to know whether your child is developing these foundational skills, let's connect. 770-675-6311 or [email protected]

🧠 Want to grow your child’s vocabulary and keep them engaged?

Say hello to puzzles, word games, and brain boosters!

As a reading tutor, I use crosswords, word searches, and logic puzzles to help kids stretch their thinking and their word bank.

These activities are more than just fun—they build connections between words, definitions, and usage.

🧩 Puzzles promote problem-solving and critical thinking.

šŸ“– And when tied to vocabulary? That’s a double win!

šŸ‘‡ What’s your child’s favorite word game right now?

Let’s swap ideas in the comments!

Want to expand your child’s vocabulary without a single worksheet? šŸŒ

The best learning sometimes happens outside the classroom.

As a reading tutor, I’ve seen the power of real-world experiences: nature walks, museum visits, historical sites, and even travel.

These moments introduce students to new vocabulary naturally—through curiosity and conversation.

🧠 When kids see it, they say it.

šŸ—ŗļø When they explore it, they remember it.

✨ Learning is everywhere—just ask questions as you go.

šŸ”½ What’s one word your child learned during a trip, hike, or visit to somewhere new?

Are vocabulary gaps silently holding your child back? Most parents don’t realize how much word knowledge affects reading, writing, and confidence. What’s one word your child recently struggled to understand—or use correctly? Check out the blog in the comments for more insights.

Tired of hearing ā€œI don’t know what that word meansā€?

šŸ‘©šŸ¾ā€šŸ« As a reading tutor, I teach kids how to build real vocabulary—not by memorizing, but by reading smarter.

šŸ“˜ Tip #1: Read diverse books together.
It’s the easiest way to grow your child’s word power and confidence.

šŸ’¬ What’s your favorite book to read with your child that sparked a fun vocabulary moment?
