Wow! Things are popping at PHMS. Teachers are preparing their rooms for the opening day, administrators are at work planning and organizing, and custodians are working crazy-hard to make the site clean and ready for our students. Teacher leaders are getting together with administrators to discuss the major initiatives of PBIS and their grade level PLCs, and plans are in the works for our Meet & Greet on August 1st. There’s a lot of hard work taking place at PHMS, so come by and chat!

Beyond Textbooks, Douglas Unified Schools, and Paul Huber Middle School

This year marks the implementation year of Beyond Textbooks for Douglas Unified Schools and Paul Huber Middle School. As a site, we will fully implement this district-wide instructional program with the intent of increasing our students’ learning in all content areas. Beyond Textbooks is a program originally created by Vail School District that unwraps, prioritizes and calendars standards, while developing delivery and assessment strategies to measure student learning. The goal in this curriculum effort is to increase our students’ achievement in all content areas, and to provide students with knowledge that serves them far beyond a test date.

Major instructional concepts in this program include unwrapping standards to determine big ideas, key vocabulary, student-friendly language, essential questions, and performance tasks that prove mastery. Core subject curriculums at each grade level are established and district-wide expectations for what teachers should teach and what students should learn and be able to do in relation to a specific standard are the result of the thoughtful and diligent use of Beyond Textbooks. Curriculum calendars facilitate the administration of common curriculum-aligned assessments, and collaboration among teachers and administrators is encouraged with Beyond Textbooks. We will tap into a valuable resource with Beyond Textbooks and move our students closer to the knowledge acquisition and success they deserve!

Welcome to Paul Huber Middle School!

On behalf of our amazing faculty, staff, and administrative team, we welcome you to the Paul Huber page. This is our official venue for making announcements and keeping you connected with what’s going on at PHMS.

This summer comes with some exciting changes, and as we move into the 2014/15 school year, the priorities of these changes will always focus on students. PHMS will see a new administrative team in Lisa Holland, Principal, and Cyndy Ortega, Assistant Principal come July 1st, 2014. Both administrators believe in supporting a vision for the school that serves all students, in creating a culture that values education, in sharing leadership with stakeholders, and in concentrating their time on improving instructional practices in the classroom. These are beliefs that research shows improves schools and raise student success rates on all levels, and Ms. Holland and Mrs. Ortega will lead with these ideas in mind.

There are several major initiatives that PHMS will be working on throughout the 2014/15 school year, all of which intermesh and support each other. First and foremost is moving PHMS from a “C” grade to a “B” grade. Second is building a Positive Behavioral Intervention System at our site that follows the expectations of Douglas High School. Third is to refine and build our Professional Learning Community Teams, and fourth is to rollout Beyond Textbooks for all grades and Eureka Math for our 6th grade.

Exciting things are taking shape at PHMS, so keep in touch by visiting our page regularly!
