It’s count day! The Great Southeast Pollinator Census is happening today and tomorrow, August 21–22, and we need your help putting Alabama’s pollinators on the map.

Getting involved is easy—and it only takes 15 minutes:
• Print your counting sheet.
• Find a pollinator-friendly plant.
• Watch for 15 minutes.
• Record the insects that land.
• Upload your count.

Whether you count in your backyard, garden, schoolyard or community, your observations become part of a larger scientific effort to better understand and conserve pollinators across the Southeast.

People of all ages can participate, so grab your family, coworkers, classmates or friends and head outside. Even Aubie is counting—will you join him?

Learn more about the count here: https://www.aces.edu/go/GreatSoutheastPollinatorCensus

You can directly download your count sheet here: https://www.aces.edu/go/6685

A huge thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to join us for our 5th Annual Tomato Sandwich Day last Friday!

This event would not have been possible without the generosity and support of our community partners and volunteers. We are especially thankful to Brandon Lewis of Pleasant Ridge Farms for providing the fresh, locally grown tomatoes and Gateway Foodland for supplying the bread that made our sandwiches possible.

We also extend our appreciation to Winston County Soil & Water Conservation District, Savannah Ledlow and Katti Miller Lindley of Keller Home Care, Hannah Brannon of Enhabit Home Health & Hospice, and Jason Taylor for helping keep our guests stocked with chips and refreshments throughout the day. A special thank you goes to Terri Finley and Georgette Owens for their help assembling and serving sandwiches, and to Stephanie Taylor and Allyson Evans for generously donating our door prizes.

Their willingness to give their time, talents, and resources helped make the event a success from start to finish. From the fresh ingredients to the helping hands, Tomato Sandwich Day was a community effort. We are thankful to everyone who helped make this event possible. Whether you stopped by for a sandwich, visited with friends and neighbors, learned about Extension programs, or simply enjoyed the festivities, we are grateful you spent part of your day with us.

We’re already counting down the days to next year 🍅🥪

Eggs are a versatile household staple and a complete source of protein. Whether they come from the grocery store or a backyard flock, they require careful handling from farm to fridge.

The steps are simple. Proper washing, storage, and cooking can help preserve egg quality and reduce food-safety risks. With a little mindful care, consumers can keep eggs safe, nutritious, and delicious.
