While our scholars and teachers are enjoying a well-deserved summer break, exciting things are happening behind the scenes at Heard Elementary School!

Summer is the perfect time for us to refresh, upgrade, and prepare our school for another amazing year of learning.

From facility improvements and campus beautification projects to deep cleaning, organization, and classroom preparations, our dedicated staff and district teams are hard at work creating the best possible environment for our scholars and teachers.

Every improvement is made with our scholars in mind to ensure they return to a safe, welcoming, and engaging place to learn and grow.

We are grateful for everyone working throughout the summer to help make Heard Elementary shine. We can't wait to welcome our students back and showcase all the exciting updates for the new school year!

Mientras nuestros alumnos y maestros disfrutan de un merecido descanso veraniego, ¡están sucediendo cosas emocionantes entre bastidores en la escuela Heard Elementary!

El verano es el momento perfecto para renovar, actualizar y preparar nuestra escuela para otro año increíble de aprendizaje.

Desde mejoras en las instalaciones y proyectos de embellecimiento del campus hasta limpieza profunda, organización y preparación de las aulas, nuestro dedicado personal y los equipos del distrito trabajan arduamente para crear el mejor entorno posible para nuestros alumnos y maestros.

Summer Learning continues for our amazing educators. ☀️🧮💙

Mrs. Farmer and Ms. Freeman enjoyed the K-5 Number Sense and Number Talks Training from AMSTI.

They learned about characteristics of number sense, like flexibility and fluency, and how number talks give teachers important opportunities to facilitate the development of number sense.

They also learned the importance of teachers fostering a class environment where students feel comfortable to share their thinking, collaborate, and learn from their mistakes.

They came away more confident in their ability to facilitate number talks and with knowledge of several resources they can implement this upcoming school year!

El aprendizaje de verano continúa para nuestros increíbles educadores. ☀️🧮💙

La Sra. Farmer y la Srta. Freeman disfrutaron de la capacitación sobre Sentido Numérico y Conversaciones Numéricas (Number Talks) para los grados K-5, impartida por AMSTI.

Aprendieron sobre las características del sentido numérico —tales como la flexibilidad y la fluidez— y sobre cómo las conversaciones numéricas brindan a los maestros oportunidades importantes para facilitar el desarrollo de dicho sentido.

También aprendieron sobre la importancia de que los maestros fomenten un entorno de clase en el que los estudiantes se sientan cómodos para compartir sus razonamientos, colaborar y aprender de sus errores.

¡Regresaron con mayor confianza en su capacidad para facilitar las conversaciones numéricas y con el conocimiento de diversos recursos que podrán implementar durante el próximo año escolar!

Dothan City Schools is bringing reading, learning, and summer fun directly into the community with the launch of the district’s brand new Backyard Summer Reading Program, the first program of its kind for DCS.

The Backyard Summer Reading Program is designed to keep students engaged throughout the summer through read-alouds, interactive games, hands-on activities, literacy enrichment, free books for students to take home, and free meals for children 18 and under. Meals are first-come, first-served.

District and school leaders will lead read-alouds for students and families, giving them the opportunity to connect with school principals and district leadership in a fun, relaxed, and family-friendly environment ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.

“This program is about creating memorable and educational experiences for our students, encouraging a love for learning, and bringing families together in a positive way throughout the summer,” said Superintendent Dr. Garrick Askew. “We are excited to take learning beyond the classroom and right into our own backyards.”

The Backyard Summer Reading Program will take place at the following locations:

• Wednesday, June 3, 2026 | 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Jamison Village, 705 N. Lena Street

• Wednesday, June 10, 2026 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Crawford Village, 602 S. Lena St.

• Wednesday, June 17, 2026 | 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
