Today begins our annual active shooter response training at our four Calera Schools. This week we will be at Calera Middle and High Schools.

Our training is a bit different than most. We train to stop the shooter as rapidly as possible with random groups of 1-3 Calera officers and SROs. I believe that this most accurately replicates what will happen if we ever deal with such an event. As we have seen repeatedly, these events must be stopped as quickly as possible to save lives. We know that help is coming but what happens in the first few minutes is vital and our goal is to train our officers to have the knowledge and confidence they need to take out the threat.

We also encourage our patrol, admin and investigative staff to randomly visit campuses throughout the school year. Those with intent to harm our students will never be sure just how many armed officers they will face.

Confidence is built through repetition and familiarity using realistic scenarios and equipment. We will be training throughout the summer at all four schools. (Chief Hyche)

Today the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County Department of Health announced the launch of "Project Child Safe," a collaborative campaign designed to promote responsible gun ownership and prevent accidental firearm incidents. This 90-day summer initiative will provide free gun locks and gun safety education to residents, helping to protect children and families by reducing the risk of fi****ms falling into unauthorized hands.
