The Harvest Within
Autumn comes without much explanation—
just cooler mornings, and darker nights. Leaves letting go of what they held all summer,
The trees turning themselves
into something honest, but before the leaves fall, they show off their colors, a reminder of the fire within and the promise of another new awakening and the beauty of the coming winter slumber. We all need reflection time.
Maybe that’s what this season asks of us:
to take a look at what we’ve grown.
Not just the things that worked,
not just the beautiful parts,
but the whole strange harvest—
the hard years,
the almost-loves,
the people we still miss,
the dreams that never quite made it to the table.
There is something to be gathered there, too.
A little wisdom from the heartbreak.
A little courage from surviving.
A few good memories
still warm from the sun.
And then, one evening,
we look up.
The sky seems to rearrange itself this time of year,
new constellations rising into view,
stars we somehow forgot were there.
And suddenly we remember
how enormous everything is.
How small we are—
one person,
one life,
one little patch of earth
beneath all that darkness.
But look closer.
Somewhere, someone else is looking up too.
Maybe they’re thinking about someone they lost.
Maybe they’re falling in love.
Maybe they’re trying to make sense of a difficult year.
Maybe they’re simply standing there, quietly amazed that the stars exist at all.
We may never know their names.
Still, for a moment,
we are all gathered beneath the same sky, small as seeds,
bright as anything.
So let autumn come.
Let it take what is ready to fall.
Let it leave behind what is worth keeping.
And when the nights grow long,
look up.
There is more than enough sky for all of us.
Somewhere in the harvest
of everything we’ve been through,
there is still something growing.
Your soul, always growing.
