The rain did not cooperate with us yesterday and the students were not able to plant during school time. We will be at the garden tomorrow around 9am if anyone is available to come help plant. It would be great to have some of the kiddos help out too! We’d love to send photos to the generous businesses that donated plants for our garden.

Our peas and carrots are looking good in the front garden. This coming week is the perfect time to get those plants in the ground. Let us know if we can help answer any questions you may have about your plants.

This will give the kids an opportunity to learn outside in the fresh air.
The Dormont Elementary Garden Committee has a lot of finishing touches to add to this classroom but in the meantime we wanted to share and say Thank You Dormont!!

Still producing some fine looking veges and fruit. The watermelon is so large and close to being picked for the cafeteria. The celery still has a couple more weeks before we should pick it. Celery take about 5 months to mature.
Wondering what you can still plant?
This is a good time to sow beets, turnips, radishes and onions.
In a couple weeks would be a good time to break up your garlic cloves and sow.

We are getting four more beds tomorrow and will need top soil to fill them.
If you would like to help out please drop off a bag of top soil in the front garden or by the shed in front of the school. In return please help yourself self to the fresh peppers in the garden.

Hopefully no one has transplanted their tomatoes yet! It's still a bit cold, so waiting until after memorial day is best for heat-loving plants like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and ground cherries. If you have already planted them, just make sure you cover them with something to protect them from the elements, especially if it gets below freezing!

It's also important to harden off ALL of your seedlings before transplanting them outside. Hardening off means placing the plants outside for a couple hours the first day, bringing them back inside, and repeating the process for about a week, increasing the amount of time outside every day.

Don't forget that tomatoes grow best when you bury their entire stem! All of those little "hairs" you see on a tomato stem are roots and if they make soil contact, they will grow! Plant your tomatoes all the way up to the top leaves and you will get a huge and healthy root system.
