The principal glanced at my muddy boots and apologized to the class for my “untidy appearance.”

He didn’t know that in a few minutes, I was about to change one boy’s life forever.

My name is Joseph. I’m 68. I don’t have a LinkedIn profile or a retirement fund managed by some high-rise office.
I have 400 acres of Iowa soil and hands that haven’t known real softness since 1974.

My granddaughter begged me to come to Career Day. I knew the usual roster: a corporate lawyer, a software engineer… and me.
The guidance counselor introduced me with a polite, uneasy smile. “This is Joseph. He works in… agriculture.”
He made it sound like I carried a contagious illness.

I stepped up to the mic. No slides. No PowerPoint. Just my hands—scarred, stained, honest.

“I’ve never sat in a lecture hall,” I told the quiet room. “I don’t know what ‘synergy’ means. But I do know this: when grocery shelves are empty, a diploma won’t feed you.”

“You are being told that without college, you’ve failed. But this country doesn’t run on emails. It runs on the backs of people unafraid to get their hands dirty.”

I pointed at the attorney. “He makes paperwork.”
I pointed at myself. “I make food. And when blizzards hit and trucks stall, paperwork won’t keep anyone warm. My corn will.”

Most kids bolted when the bell rang. But one boy lingered.
Skinny. Hoodie pulled up. Kicking at the gym floor.
“My dad’s a mechanic,” he whispered. “Teachers say I should ‘escape’ that life.”

My heart sank.
I rested a hand on his shoulder. “Son, when an ambulance breaks down with someone dying inside, who saves them? The architect? No. Your dad does. He keeps the world moving. Never think his work is less. It’s something to honor.”

He nodded, straightened, and walked away.

I returned to my fields and forgot about it—until yesterday.

At the hardware store, a woman ran to me, tears streaming.
“You’re the farmer,” she said. “My son… he was embarrassed by his dad for years. Wouldn’t let him pick him up in the work truck. But after that day… he’s in the garage every night. Told his dad, ‘Teach me how the engine works.’ First time in ten years I’ve seen my husband proud.”

We stood there among hammers and wrenches, and my throat tightened.

We’ve made a terrible mistake.
We’ve taught a generation that working with your hands is second-best.
We’ve shamed welders, farmers, electricians, mechanics—the people who actually keep the world turning.

Here’s the truth:
You can fill the world with CEOs and influencers.
But if no one plants the seed, welds the pipe, or turns the wrench…
Civilization will crumble in days.

To every young person who loves to build, repair, grow, create:
We need you.
There is honor in soil. Pride in grease.
One day, when everything falls apart, the people in suits will be looking for you to save them.

Seeking donation of old towels. An odd request, but surely some of our families have one or two old towels they might be able to part with.
Thank you ahead of time.

Please, don't buy any towels!
Just bring them to school whenever.
