Supporting Small Businesses. Strengthening Our Dorchester Community.

At UMass Boston, community engagement means investing in the people, businesses, and organizations that make our surrounding neighborhoods thrive.

We are proud to sponsor the Greater Ashmont Main Streets Business Breakfasts, a monthly gathering that brings together local entrepreneurs, small business owners, creatives, and community partners to build relationships, exchange ideas, and strengthen Dorchester’s local economy.

These informal networking events are free and open to all, creating valuable opportunities for connection and collaboration.

Recently, I was glad to join members of the UMass Boston community and our Dorchester neighbors in marking the 40th anniversary of the Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

This memorial holds a special place in our community, honoring the 80 Dorchester men who gave their lives in service during the Vietnam War and ensuring that their sacrifice is never forgotten.

I was especially pleased to be joined by a contingent of UMass Boston staff, including members of our Facilities team, who take tremendous pride in caring for and maintaining this important site throughout the year. Their work is one of the many ways UMass Boston remains connected to the community beyond the boundaries of our campus.

When the flags at the memorial were recently stolen, our Office of Community & City Relations was also happy to step in and replace them. It was a small gesture, but an important one for a place that means so much to veterans, their families, and generations of Dorchester residents.

Forty years after its dedication, the Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial remains a powerful place of remembrance, reflection, and community.

Grateful to everyone who has worked over the decades to preserve its legacy, and to my UMass Boston colleagues who continue to help care for it today. Thanks Javier Rivas📸

Congratulations to Professor Katherine Dafforn, Distinguished Professor at UMass Boston and Director of the Stone Living Lab, on being named to the 2026 TIME100 Next list, recognizing emerging leaders from around the world who are shaping the future.

This is an extraordinary and well-deserved recognition of Katherine’s leadership in coastal ecology, climate resilience, and nature-based solutions. Through her work with the Stone Living Lab and as a co-founder of the global Living Seawalls project, she is helping develop innovative approaches that strengthen coastal communities while protecting and restoring marine ecosystems.

It is also another great example of the world-class research taking place right here at UMass Boston, the City of Boston’s public research university, where our faculty, students, and partners are tackling some of the most consequential challenges facing our city, our region, and the world.

Congratulations, Katherine, on this tremendous honor.

You Can’t Beat Boston.

Great to welcome the City of Boston's Mayor Michelle Wu to UMass Boston recently, along with Boston City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune and Councilor Boston City Councilor John FitzGerald, to help spotlight the You Can’t Beat Boston campaign.

UMass Boston has been part of this effort from the beginning. Chancellor Suarez-Orozco joined leaders from across Boston’s business, civic and nonprofit communities in helping shape an initiative focused on telling Boston’s story and attracting and retaining the people and talent that make this city such a special place.

And there’s no better place to help tell that story than Boston’s public research university.

Our students reflect Boston and its neighborhoods, and they are an essential part of the talent, energy and workforce that will shape the city’s future.

Great to have the Mayor, Chancellor Suárez-Orozco, Council President Louijeune and Councilor FitzGerald together on campus to celebrate the campaign and UMass Boston’s place in it.

UMass Boston continues to establish itself as a leader in the rapidly evolving conversation around artificial intelligence and its impact on society.

On October 27, under the leadership of Chancellor Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, UMass Boston will host Ethics & The Future of Artificial Intelligence, an international conference bringing together leading policymakers, industry leaders, scholars, practitioners, and students to examine one of the defining issues of our time.

Presented in partnership with the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Latin American AI Network for Integral Human Development, the conference builds on the work of UMass Boston’s Paul English Applied AI Institute, founded three years ago as the nation’s first university-based institute dedicated to optimizing AI tools across professions.

The conference will explore how human dignity, democratic values, and ethical frameworks can guide the responsible development and implementation of AI, while examining its potential to transform research, healthcare, climate solutions, workforce development, and access to knowledge.

It is great to see Chancellor Suárez-Orozco and UMass Boston bringing this important international conversation to our campus and positioning our university at the intersection of technology, ethics, public policy, and the public good.

A great example today of what it means for UMass Boston to truly stand with the City of Boston.

Mayor Michelle Wu joined UMass Boston and the Boston Public Health Commission to announce a new partnership that will give our Urban Public Health students hands-on experience while helping deliver evidence-based health education to Boston Public Schools, high school students.

Beginning this fall, UMass Boston seniors will train alongside BPHC professionals before working directly with students at Roxbury Prep Charter School, Uncommon Charter High School, Boston Prep, and Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School. It’s experiential learning with a real public impact, connecting what our students learn in the classroom with the health and well-being of communities across Boston.

As Chancellor Marcelo M Suarez-Orozco said, public health begins close to home. This partnership builds on UMass Boston’s role as Boston’s public research university and our commitment to working alongside the City to address health disparities and improve outcomes for Boston residents.

A special shoutout to Boston Public Health Commission's Commissioner Dr. Bisola Ojikutu MD MPH FIDSA for her leadership and partnership, and it was great to have Boston City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune and City Councilor Boston City Councilor John FitzGerald with us supporting this important work.

Another strong example of UMass Boston putting our public mission into action right here in Boston.

Recently, we held our Fall Convocation was a wonderful reminder of what makes UMass Boston such a special institution.

The ceremony brought our campus community together to recognize newly tenured and promoted faculty, formally welcome and induct our newest students, and celebrate Christopher Nasr of the College of Management, recipient of the John A. Ryan Award.
We also heard a timely keynote address from Dr. Ashish Jha, Co-Founder and CEO of BioRadar.

Chancellor Marcelo M Suarez-Orozco’s address reflected his deep commitment to our students, faculty, and staff, as well as UMass Boston’s essential role as the City of Boston’s public research university. His leadership continues to strengthen a university that opens doors, creates opportunity, and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and the communities we serve.

It was a wonderful start to the academic year and another proud day to be a Beacon.

A great example of what strong federal partnerships can mean for UMass Boston and our community.

Representative Stephen F. Lynch has secured $1 million in federal funding to help rehabilitate UMass Boston’s 50-year-old saltwater pump station, an innovative system that draws water from Savin Hill Bay to help cool our campus. The planned upgrades could eventually allow the system to help heat portions of campus as well, while supporting UMass Boston’s broader decarbonization efforts.

Congressman Lynch has long understood UMass Boston’s importance to the city and region, and we are grateful for his continued advocacy and investment in our university.

As Chancellor Marcelo M Suarez-Orozco noted at this week’s announcement, this project is part of a much larger effort to dramatically reduce the university’s carbon emissions and move our campus toward a more sustainable future. It is also another example of UMass Boston putting research, innovation, and nature-based solutions into practice right here on Columbia Point.

Great to see Congressman Lynch, Chancellor Suárez-Orozco, Boston City Councilor John FitzGerald, and UMass Boston doctoral student Kayla Bradley come together to highlight this important investment.

Thank you to Congressman Lynch for continuing to deliver for UMass Boston and for recognizing the role our university can play in advancing climate resilience and sustainability in Boston and beyond.

UMass Boston was well represented, with Chancellor Marcelo M Suarez-Orozco joined by an outstanding group of city and regional leaders at our table, including Boston City Councilors Erin Murphy, Boston City Councilor John FitzGerald, .louijeune, Henry Santana, and Brian Worrell, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden, and Revere Mayor Patrick Keefe.
