🎓 Senior Spotlight: Andrés Yepez
When Andrés arrived at Shelton in 8th grade, he wasn’t excited about the move. Leaving Peru meant leaving behind his friends, his school, and the life he knew. Naturally shy, he worried about starting over in a new country and a much bigger school.
But Shelton quickly changed that.
Through the support of his mentors, teachers, and classmates what once felt unfamiliar became something much greater: a second family.
Some of his most memorable Shelton moments came in unexpected ways—on the soccer field. In 9th grade, he broke his arm during the very first game of the season. More recently, he suffered a facial injury during a recess soccer match. While the injuries were painful, what he remembers most is how everyone rallied around him. Teachers checked on him, classmates reached out, and the next day people throughout campus stopped to ask how he was feeling.
“That’s when I realized people here really care.”
Family has always been at the center of Andrés’ life. Born in Bolivia to an Ecuadorian father and Uruguayan mother, and raised in Peru, he proudly says, “My heart will always be Peruvian.” He has a special bond with his sister, Sofia. He deeply admires her and is incredibly proud of the person she is becoming.
Andrés’ greatest inspiration is Lionel Messi. Beyond his talent, he admires Messi’s humility, leadership, and commitment to putting the team first.
This fall, Andrés will travel to Boston for a sports management internship before beginning his university studies in sports management or sports journalism. His love of sports began with his father, spending countless hours watching soccer, collecting team jerseys, and sharing unforgettable moments together.
Ten years from now, Andrés hopes to be building a career he loves, traveling the world with his family, and continuing to follow the passions that have always guided him.
We are proud of the young man Andrés has become and can’t wait to see where his journey takes him. Once a shy student, he leaves Shelton as an important part of the family he helped build.
💚 Congratulations, Andrés! We will miss you.
