You look around the room and see people moving with a comfort you don't have yet, and it starts to feel like a race you're losing. It isn't a race. Every person you're comparing yourself to had the exact class you just had, at some point, and felt exactly the way you feel now.

Muscles you didn't know you had are complaining, and part of you is wondering if this is your body telling you to quit. Soreness after a first or second class is expected, not a warning sign. It fades faster than you'd think once your body adjusts to the movement.

Your first class ended with you tapping over and over, and now there's a voice telling you maybe you're just not built for this. Getting tapped isn't the score of the class, it's the lesson plan. Every student, including the ones who've been here for years, got tapped constantly in their first month.

You've never played a sport seriously, never trained for anything, and BJJ sounds like something for people who already move well. Most people who walk in for their first class aren't athletes either. The ones who improve fastest aren't the most athletic, they're the ones who kept showing up.

Our fundamentals class groups beginners with beginners, adults included, so you're not training next to someone with a decade's head start. Everyone in that room is building the same foundation at the same time.
