Shout out to Ms. Alyssa Barrios, 5th grade teacher at Stainke Elementary for supporting her students by activating visuals, and providing sentence frames for their writing about their scientific investigation. She also kept students on their toes by randomizing who shared out to the whole group. Keep up the great work! 🎯 DISD C. Stainke Elementary

Shout out to Ms. Ana Mercado, 4th grade Science teacher at Caceres elementary for her awesome implementation of the "Big 6" Ms. Mercado knows that if she directs her students to use visual anchors multiple times throughout the day, her students will use content vocabulary during collaborative group discussions. She skillfully utilizes universal prompts for quick writes during independent practice and communicate by explaining when using the new question item types for exit tickets. Way to go Ms. Mercado!🎯 DISD J.W. Caceres Elementary

Can't wait to see all those seedlings popping up!

The science department has been busy delivering soil and seeds for our kinder classrooms in preparation for their STEM and Human impact on Earth activities. Students will be researching the life cycle of plants using organic vegetable seeds and flowering plants. The science department understands that students learn best through hands-on enrichment activities. Can’t wait to see students enjoying nature and the outdoors! 🎯

Shoutout to Ms. Edna Rodriguez, 5th grade teacher at Garza Elementary for delivering a jam-packed goal one lesson on energy flow through ecosystems, aka food chains. Ms. Rodriguez had students arrange organism cards to map out how energy flows from the sun, to producers, and then consumers. The combination of academic vocabulary, visual stimuli and processing tools help anchor students' learning. Great job Ms. Rodriguez! 🎯 DISD P.S. Garza Elementary

Biology teachers at Donna North spent their PLC planning period reviewing TEKS B.10B, completed an IQ analysis, and identified the standard's key vocabulary words, misconceptions, and specificity. Teachers developed exit tickets for the next week using tier 2 and tier 3 key vocabulary, made an exemplar, reviewed student samples, and discussed improving their questioning. Excellent planning, DNHS biology teachers! DDISD Donna North High School

Ms. Laura Rivera, 5th grade science at Salazar, excels with Exit Tickets! She designed an Exit Ticket that required students to describe how energy flows through an ecosystem via predator-prey and other relationships in food chains. Next, she empowered her students by modeling how to flip the question stem in order to provide a sentence starter for their responses. Awesome work, Ms. Rivera! 🎯 DDISD Salazar Elementary

Kudos to Mr. Juan Hernandez, 5th Grade teacher at Adame Elementary who always makes sure to anchor students’ conceptual understanding to strong visual stimuli. He frequently uses models and realia to demonstrate processes or clarify academic vocabulary, making science real for students. He also uses a variety of processing tools to help them engage with the concepts and record their thinking. You’re out of this world, Mr. Hernandez! Keep it up! 🎯 DISD Julian S. Adame Elementary

Battle of the Beaks! Mr. Antonio Reyes of Donna North HS is making Biology interactive for his students by using hands-on learning. Students investigate different tools as a model for various shapes of bird beaks, and track their effectiveness in a table. This processing tool helps them dig through the data to draw conclusions about which beak shape works best for a given food source. Great job, Mr. Reyes! 🎯 DISD Donna North High School

Ms. Emily Guerra’s 5th grade science students at Truman Price elementary are soaking up the sun! Prompted by probing questions, her students built models of the Sun, Earth, and Moon using straw, clay, rulers, and table tennis balls. They also physically modeled the rotation and revolution of the Earth and Moon around the Sun with their bodies to internalize the motions. To top it all off, students then recorded the learning in their notebooks, connecting visual (physical) stimuli with interactive notebooks and processing tools…We’re over the moon for you, Ms. Guerra! 🎯 DISD Truman Price Elementary

5th grade science teachers, Ms. Irisema Lopez and Mr. Enrique Castro at LeNoir Elementary, guided by elementary science strategist Ms. Flor Gomez, put their heads together to create exit tickets for science. They dissected former STAAR released items and identified some key vocabulary and patterns in question stems, and designed multiple questions that they’ve already used with their students this week! Good work Science team! 🎯 DISD LeNoir Elementary

Ms. Rebecca Gutierrez, Biology lead at DHS, relies on a variety of strategies to ensure her students understand new concepts. Using physical modeling to show how genes flow through populations and change over time, along with a variety of card sorts and scenarios, as well as anchoring learning in interactive notebooks, she makes sure her students “get it” before they leave her class. She and her inclusion teacher, Mr. Jose Moreno, are committed to making biology comprehensible and memorable to their students. Awesome work, team! 🎯 DISD Donna High School

Ms. Lisette Flores, 8th Grade Science teacher at Todd Middle School ensures total participation with individual response “whiteboards” fashioned from white cardstock in a protective cover. This no opt-out strategy keeps students engaged; each student individually writes or draws their response to the teacher’s leveled questions. Ms. Flores can then scan the room for understanding, adjusting her instruction as she goes. She also layers on hand gestures for plate boundaries, guiding students to make a physical connection to the key vocabulary and concepts. Keep it up, Ms. Flores! 🎯 DDISD W.A Todd Middle School

Ms. Emily Guerra at Truman Price Elementary has been making learning stick with anchor charts! Used as part of her “I Do” and then as a reference for guided and independent practice, the combo of text, visuals, and mnemonics allows her students to become fluid and independent in applying new science concepts. Keep up the great work Ms. Guerra! 🎯👏
