Breaking News from the Donna ISD Transportation Department!
Today, we recognize one of our bus drivers for his heroic action that saved a life on the road. We are so proud of bus driver, Ausencio "Homer" Sustaita for following his instincts of providing assistance to a truck driver.
It was about 5:55 a.m. when Mr. Sustaita was heading north on the intersection of Val Verde Rd and Expressway 83 in Donna. It was like any other morning, heading into the communities to pick up our DISD students. As the streetlight turned green, he accelerated to go under the overpass heading north. As he was passing under the bridge on the intersection, he noticed a truck heading south but at very slow rate. He had a feeling there was something wrong with the truck driver. The truck was moving even slower as he turned eastbound under the under path, resulting in a traffic block. Mr. Sustaita looked at his rear-view mirror and made a decision to turn on his red flashlights on his bus and used his radio to call for help. He then headed towards the truck, thinking he may be having some kind of a stroke. Mr. Sustaita knocked on the truck's door and window but there was no response. As he tried to render aide, he suddenly noticed a women running towards the truck. Turns out the women was the driver's daughter who was following her dad the whole time. Mr. Sustaita and the daughter got to the driver and began evaluating him. The driver seemed confused and non-responsive, then Donna PD officers arrived on scene. Once the ambulance arrived, they loaded the truck driver for treatment. Mr. Sustaita offered assistance in moving the semi and showed PD his proper credentials and was allowed to do so to a secured location. The truck driver's family approached Mr. Sustaita to thank him for all his help in saving the truck driver. They seemed very appreciative. He handed over the truck's keys; no further actions were taken in his part and Mr. Sustaita continued on to his daily route.
Sometimes we are called to be at the right place and at the right time for some unexplained reasons, and actions like this bus driver are heroic. Way to go Mr. Sustaita! You are a hero!
