German Student Exchange – Round Two!!

Seminole County High School students recently returned from their second visit to Berufliche Schulen Schönbrunn in Landshut, Bavaria. What began in 2022 as virtual meetings has grown into a meaningful exchange focused on agriculture, sustainability, and cultural understanding.

Highlights of the trip included planting cover crops with German agriculture students, cooking in the culinary department, and creating eco-friendly shopping bags. Students also visited the Lohengrinwiese Nature Reserve, participated in sports activities, and explored iconic sites like the Zugspitze, Lake Eibsee, Regensburg, Trausnitz Castle, and Dachau Memorial.

The exchange has fostered lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences. It has become an important part of Seminole County’s CTAE program — with hopes to continue for years to come. Special thanks to our German hosts for their warm hospitality!

Seminole County CTAE is on the move again! Today, July 1st, 10 SCHS students arrived in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany to spend the week learning alongside students from our partner school. This marks our second visit, and we’re thrilled to continue building connections and sharing experiences with our fellow students and colleagues abroad.

These Agribusiness and Ag Leadership students enjoyed hosting our “neighbors” back in November and look forward to spending time with those that visited and making new connections as well! Stay tuned for updates as we embark on a weeklong journey of learning about agriculture, history and Bavarian culture!

Sara Jo Fain participates in Georgia Future Educators Signing Day at SCMHS

In an effort to build excitement around the teaching profession and encourage students to pursue a career in education, Seminole County Middle High School participated in Georgia’s Future Educators Signing Day, a statewide initiative sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education, on May 7, 2024.

The event celebrated Sara Jo Fain, from the class of 2024, who has made the decision to pursue a career in education. “As the very first student to complete the Teaching as a Profession pathway here at Seminole, I am thrilled to celebrate Sara Jo, as well as the growth of the pathway offering, in hopes of creating future educators for Seminole County School System”, CTAE Director Kathryn Touchton stated. “We're extremely proud of Sara Jo as she signs on to pursue a career as an educator, embodying dedication, passion, and a commitment to shaping the future of Seminole County,” states Principal Mary Jean Albritton.

Georgia Future Educators Signing Day, held each year during Teacher Appreciation Week, is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Education’s Division of Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education in partnership with the Georgia Early Childhood Education Foundation (GECEF) and Georgia’s colleges and universities.

“The most important thing we can do, as we work to prepare all students for life, is recruit our best and brightest to become teachers – and make it viable for them to stay,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “Through Georgia Future Educators Signing Day, we recognize the high school students who are answering the call to become educators and make a lasting difference for our state. I commend these students and look forward to the impact they will make in the classroom!”

Event attendees included Mr. Mark Earnest, Superintendent, Mrs. Mary Jean Albritton, Principal, Mrs. Jessica Lanier, Assistant Principal, Mr. Lamar Landing, Assistant Principal, Mrs. Kimber Sellers, High School Counselor, Mrs. Ashley Glass, Registrar Mrs. Dameca Robinson, Mentor Teacher and Mrs. Kathryn Touchton, CTAE Director. Mrs. Dawn Cunningham, teacher of the Teaching as a Profession pathway was unable to attend due to professional development requirements. Also in attendance were Sara Jo’s parents, Brent and Jo Nell Fain.

Seminole County Staff and Faculty are very proud of Sara Jo and look forward to her returning “home” as an educator for Seminole County Schools.

Our incredibly special visitors have arrived! An enormous amount of hard work and preparation has finally come to fruition. Nine students and three teachers from our German partner school in Landshut, Bavaria arrived on Monday evening for a fun and very full two weeks which will include spending time in our school as a true student at SCMHS, touring local farms and industry, and immersing in American culture. As you recall, four Seminole County students spent two weeks in Landshut last October and so the exchange happening again is so very exciting for all.

The visitors received a true South Georgia welcome on Tuesday, March 19th, with a lunch at The Osceola, catered by The Corner Bistro. Faculty and staff from SCMHS, as well as the students from the Agriculture Leadership class, hosted this event and it was a great start to their experience here. Our guests enjoyed exploring downtown Donalsonville, purchased a few groceries from the “The Pig” and returned to their home away from home for much needed rest.

On Wednesday, the German students experienced their first day as Seminole County students, and luckily it was club day! They attended classes with their SC partners and enjoyed having lunch in the cafeteria. After lunch, they toured the elementary school and were delighted to spend some time with the faculty and the children, and take part in the agriculture program provided to our young Seminole Indians!

Wednesday afternoon, our guests were invited out to J-Bird Ranch and had a blast riding horses, learning how to rope, and even spent some time with their cow, Stetson! Afterwards, the group had dinner at Minto’s and enjoyed some traditional American meals, including hamburgers and hot wings!

So much more is planned for our German friends, so stay tuned for updates! Thank you to all who support our agriculture program and the entire CTAE department, as we continue to grow and do great things here in America or across the pond…

Mr. Bradley Grantham from Peoples South Bank spoke to several of the CTAE classes on “How to Become a Millionaire”. The students learned a lot and enjoyed it very much! Thank you, Mr. Bradley and Peoples South Bank, for supporting our students.

Day 7, 8, and 9: REST and At It Again ✅

After a restful Sunday, our students have been back at it!! They toured the Weltwald, or “world forest” and it was incredible. Trees from all around the world, organized in geographic regions, is something to be behold. They have spent a lot of time in different classes at the school, talking with students and sharing ideas… immersed!

Day Five and Six: Amazing ✅

The students have had a little break from classes, which gave them some time to explore. They spent some of Friday and Saturday taking in Munich! This city is unreal. The massive cathedrals, historical buildings and amazing architecture, mixed with the hustle and bustle of city life is something to behold. They dined in the outdoor cafes and visited St. Michael’s, which allows amazing views of the city and The Alps. They even visited the BMW Welt and Museum where they have all BMWs and Rolls-Royces on exhibit. What an amazing two days in Bavaria!

Day two and three: BUSY ✅

On Tuesday, the students were able to tour a local dairy farm and then traveled to Ziegler Holzindustrie GmbH & Co. KG (Ziegler Group Sawmill) located in Plößberg, Bavaria. It is the largest sawmill in all of Europe. Very impressive!

School started today!! The students participated in machinery school and will do the same tomorrow. Their teacher is actually an instructor at the vocational colllege here on the same campus.

The day ended with a perfect sunset while dining at the castle. The Trausnitz Castle sits high on a hill, overlooking beautiful Landshut. The food was delicious and the view was spectacular!

Day One: Extraordinary ✅

Today was the first day in the school. We stayed on campus all day, touring the facilities. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast with breads and homemade jams and excellent coffee!! We saw their cows and the farms they use to teach. They have many beautiful areas around campus for the students to enjoy. We joined a healthcare class and answered many questions and asked more! We had lunch in their cafeteria and then participated in an English class. The highlight of the day was our dinner. The culinary class not only served us a true Bavarian meal, but let us help prepare it! They even had a Bavarian band come and play for us as we dined. They decorated, made signs in English so we would understand and created a true biergarten right there in the school. We drank Spezi (a bottled German concoction of lemonade and coke), ate pretzels, cheeses, pork, kraut, knodel, and Apple strudel. It was delicious and we had so much fun! As a thank you, we gave the culinary students and their teacher a bracelet made by the CTI students at SCHS. They LOVED them and were proud to wear some “Seminole Green”. It was an amazing day.

It’s happening!! The very first students to participate in the Seminole County/Landshut, Bavaria, Germany cultural exchange program arrived this morning. Kade Touchton, Zada Espinoza, Chloi Miller and Landon Kirkland are here for two weeks to take some agriculture classes at our partner school and indulge in German culture. Stay tuned for updates.
