**Understanding Educational Governance in Colorado 📚🏫**

Ever wonder **who makes decisions about your child’s education?** Colorado’s public education system involves many different groups—including parents, teachers, schools, local school boards, the Colorado Department of Education, the State Board of Education, the Colorado General Assembly, and the federal government.

One important piece to know: **Colorado is a local-control state**, meaning local school boards make decisions about curriculum for their schools. Instructional materials and textbooks are also selected at the local and school level.

State assessments also play an important role by providing information about student learning and helping educators identify areas where students may need additional support. Parents also have the right under state law to excuse their children from state assessments.
