when backing an L from a judges perspective:

Continuous curve if you can. Remember to line up the pivot foot with the judge (so back pivot leg will go to the middle/ left shoulder of the person) so that you are straight. If you are slow and correct that would be better than rushing and getting “stuck” or not in line. A flowing smooth back that is in line with the judge will get a + score. Make sure to stay to the side of your horse when backing so you don’t get a major penalty for being in front.
