Consider these tips to approach parenting your struggling student.

Schools can make a huge difference — but they can’t meet a dyslexic child’s needs on their own. Even with good support in place, children spend most of their emotional and learning time at home. When understanding, adjustments, and reassurance are consistent there too, progress becomes more likely and confidence is better protected.

Supporting a dyslexic child at home isn’t about becoming a teacher or doing more work. It’s about reducing pressure, explaining how their brain works, noticing strengths, and protecting emotional wellbeing. These small, steady supports shape how a child sees themselves long before exam results ever do.

Parents of struggling students understand this message. It is a recurrence of melt downs, anxiety, panic, stomach aches, and more. As parents, we learn to navigate their needs out of desperation to ease the child's silent pain.

Teachers, unless you are one of these parents... there is no way for you to truly know or have experienced this silent suffering. How could you know?

As we end a school semester, reflect, both teachers and parents, on what went well and what didn't go quite right. Why can one element work beautifully, and the other element seem to flop? What can we incorporate to help the student or child?

Teachers, at the end of the day, student learning is the goal.

Parents, at the end of the day, child well-being is the goal.

Teachers and Parents coming together in a partnership for both elements can be more than an ideal or a dream!
