Course Information & Prerequisites:

Open to anyone meeting the NC Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) prerequisites (Firefighter I & II OR the Introduction Course).
These are OSFM certification courses.
Per state guidelines, students must achieve a 100% pass rate on the practical skills test to qualify for the written certification exam.

Reference Material for the course: IFSTA - Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 9th Edition

Office of State Fire Marshal Pre-requisite(s): The candidate must be at least 21 years of age. The candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent (i.e., GED). TIMS (FIP 7000) Firefighter, Technical Rescuer, HazMat Ops, or FLSE certified for three years.

**As of August 2020, the Certification Board requires that candidates MUST meet the prerequisite of being certified for three years in Firefighter, Technical Rescuer, HazMat Ops, or FLSE BEFORE taking Fire Instructor I.
If the student takes the class before the 3 years has been completed, they will have to take the Fire Instructor I class AGAIN after the 3 year requirement has been satisfied.

Dates: August 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30, 2026

Prerequisites for you to obtain your Certification in Technical Rescuer.

The following prerequisites are required for all TR Certifications: Medical Requirements
Firefighter/Technical Rescuer Emergency Medical Care (FIP 7001) *NC OEMS Medical 1st
Responder, EMT and higher will give credit for Firefighter/Technical Rescuer Emergency Medical
Care (FIP 7001). Candidate is required to submit certification to NC OSFM for credit.

Hazmat Materials Awareness and Operations Certification

Age and Education Candidate must be 18 years of age and hold a High School Diploma, or equivalent (i.e., GED)

Introduction to Technical Rescue Course (FRC 1200) Introduction to Technical Rescue Course (FRC 1200) is required PRIOR to taking TR Ropes (Chapter 5) or TR Common Vehicle Rescue (Chapter 8).*Certified Firefighters OR Technical Rescuers certified prior to the 2021 edition will not need the Intro to Technical Rescue Course.

TIMS Traffic Incident Management (FIP 7000) - This is a required in-person course.

TR Health and Wellness (FIP 6504) *Note: Firefighter Fireground Ops 1 (FIP 3041) meets the requirements of TR Health and Wellness (FIP 6504).
