A great piano must possess the strength to withstand immense tension — and the sensitivity to transmit the smallest vibration.

Patented on March 31, 1885, C. F. Theodore Steinway’s piano frame design united continuously bent inner and outer rims with carefully arranged braces and reinforced support beneath the keyboard. Its raised, cupola-shaped bass section also created greater space between the metal frame and soundboard, encouraging the fuller development of the instrument’s bass voice.

Patent No. 314,742 reflects the holistic thinking behind every Steinway: structure, touch, and tone conceived as parts of one musical system.

French composer Claude Debussy was born 164 years ago today. 🎶

Best known for his dream-like Impressionist piano and orchestral works, the ‘Clair de lune’ composer is considered one of the most prominent Impressionist composers, although it was a label he rejected for his own music.

While visiting the Catskills, it was a pleasant surprise to be greeted by piano sheet music embedded in artwork hanging on the wall throughout my hotel. I recognized this piece as one that I played growing up, Étude Op. 25, No. 1 by Frédéric Chopin, commonly called the "Aeolian Harp" Étude. It's a work that showcases the beauty of piano and stands as one of so many examples of Chopin's genius for capturing its expressive possibilities and letting the world hear what the piano (and pianists) can accomplish. In the past nearly two centuries since this piece was composed, it has been onward and upward.
