September at Home | A Month at Delta Worms

Sometimes you don’t realize how much has changed until you look back.

September was a busy month around our new home — working with the soil, building gardens, moving mulch, growing worms, and learning as we go.

Apple Photos surprised me by putting some of these moments together into a video. I liked it so much that I added a Delta Worms ending.

This is really what Delta Worms is about: healthy soil, growing things, experimenting, and sharing what we learn along the way.

Pre-composting can make worm feeding more manageable. By letting fresh kitchen scraps begin decomposing, along with much of their associated heat, outside the worm bed, Delta Worms can add the material gradually once it starts to stabilize. Moisture is important in a grow-out bed, but temperature deserves just as much attention. Bedding needs moisture, structure, and air space, while a soil thermometer helps catch heat that may be building below the surface. Fresh woody materials such as arbor mulch can heat as they decompose, especially in thick layers. 🌱 Building a Garden — One Bed at a Time

A few weeks ago, this was mostly bare, sandy ground.

Little by little, we’re turning it into a productive garden—laying out the beds, adding organic material, working on the soil, and finally getting plants into the ground.

For me, this garden is also a place to put into practice many of the things we talk about at Delta Worms: building healthier soil with compost, vermicompost, organic matter, and biology rather than looking for a quick fix.

There’s still a LOT of work ahead, but it’s fun to look back and see how much has already changed.

The future of our worm farm is right here.

See that tiny golden speck in the center of the photo? It’s a worm capsule, also called a cocoon. It may be small, but it’s what we hope to find when we check our breeding bed.

Worm farmers spend about 80% of their time making sure their breeder worms have the food, moisture, and conditions they need to produce these little capsules. Every one is a sign that the next generation is on its way.
