Want to help build a garden from the ground up?

Robin and I are considering inviting a small group of 3–5 local gardeners to become the Oakley Property Founding Garden Team.

Over three Saturday mornings, we’d work together to:

🪱 Build the compost and worm station.
🌿 Prepare the herb garden.
🥬 Plant the first winter vegetable garden.

This won’t be a formal class. It’s a chance to learn by doing, ask questions, enjoy good conversation, and be part of the property’s story from day one. As the garden grows, Founding Garden Team members would share in the harvest.

A winter garden is coming… whether we’re ready or not. 🥬

A visit to Berry Best Family Farm turned into an exciting surprise: about 100 winter vegetable starts are headed our way to launch our first Oakley winter garden.

There’s just one catch: the beds still need preparation, irrigation needs to go in, and the August heat is not slowing down.

But gardening has a way of reminding us that nature doesn’t wait for our schedules. We’re getting to work early in the mornings and can’t wait to share the progress.

Before we plant, we’re building the soil.

August heat isn’t the ideal time to plant delicate herbs in East Contra Costa County—but it is a great time to prepare a living, resilient garden bed.

For Robin’s future herb garden, we’re layering:

🪱 Premium worm castings
🌿 Compost
🍂 Mulch to hold moisture and protect soil life

Next comes broadforking: loosening compacted soil without turning it over and disrupting the biology below.
