The Read with Malcolm program is coming to Southside!

Malcolm Mitchell—Super Bowl Champion, author, and founder of the Share the Magic Foundation will be returning to Dinwiddie to bring his reading program to our elementary students. He will visit Southside on October 9 to share his love of reading and inspire our students. This exciting opportunity is made possible through a generous donation from Dominion Energy and a partnership with the James Solomon Russell/Saint Paul’s College Museum & Archives.

As part of the program, each student will receive a copy of one of Malcolm’s books to keep. It will be high-energy and interactive, with Malcolm engaging students throughout the program. Malcolm typically brings a magician who performs spectacular magic tricks for the students—an experience that ties perfectly into his theme, “Reading is Magic.”

Malcolm will include a read-aloud of one of his books, allowing students to follow along with their own copy.

Please see the flyer below for additional information.

🐝Sunday Shares! 🐝

4th grade students created and analyzed their own watersheds using paper, markers, and spray bottles. Students worked in teams to create the watershed. In the groups, each student had a specific role. They also learned what it means to all live downstream through students doing a small skit.

Our students took science to new heights today! 🚁🔬 During an engaging lesson on energy led by Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Ferrell, students had the exciting opportunity to put their learning into action by flying drones! What a fun, hands-on way to bring science to life! 🖤🐝💛

🐝 What an exciting first two weeks of school at Southside Elementary! Our students have already been busy learning, creating, collaborating, and thinking critically. From hands-on science and colorful art projects with Mrs. Martinez, learning musical notes with Ms. Mickens (music teacher) to interactive math walls with Mr. Walker and Mrs. Burton’s class, and class number lines in Mrs. Williams’ class, learning is happening!

Students in Mrs. Baugus’ class also participated in an exciting STEM challenge to see which group could build the tallest pencil tower without using any additional materials—and then balance a canister on top! This activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance.

We are incredibly proud of the strong start our students and staff have made. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the school year brings! 💛🐝🖤
