"HUT didn’t just help me find a job but they helped me build a life. They taught me how to write a resume that actually gets noticed, how to interview without freezing up, and how to network even when I’d rather stay in my hoodie. But they didn’t stop there. They guided me through the confusing world of adult responsibilities, from explaining health insurance options to helping me understand paychecks, taxes, and budgeting. When I landed my dream nursing school, they even connected me with resources to get affordable coverage and financial planning support. HUT gave me the confidence to show up as a professional, the knowledge to handle my finances, and the stability to plan for the future and all while keeping it real and relatable. They didn’t just prepare me for a job; they prepared me for life."

Please make a donation to HUT in honor of more young adults moving from Hoodie to Hired!

“I have been part of Higher Up Texas since graduating in 2021, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of the journey. This organization helped me move beyond the food industry and step confidently into a new chapter of my life. Today, I work at UTMB Health League City Campus as part of the transportation team on the clinic side. I stand at the podium guiding patients and visitors to the right areas of the hospital when they don’t know where to go, and I also respond to calls from upstairs to pick up patients in wheelchairs and bring them down to valet.

I’m deeply grateful for Higher Up Texas, the opportunities they’ve opened for me, and the memories we’ve created together. I’m excited to continue growing with them. I thank every Higher Up Texas member and staff member for always being there for me, and I hope good things continue to come their way and to the nonprofit every single day.”

Hannah Medina, HUT ’21, has always been someone who cares about others, not just with words, but with action.

In 2022, Hannah launched our college supply drive, a tradition that has become a meaningful source of support for our HUTs. When a friend lost their home to a fire, she rallied support to help them rebuild. Time and time again, Hannah has been the person who sees a need, shines a light on someone’s struggle, and steps up to help find a solution.

That’s who Hannah is.

Now, Hannah and her family are facing extreme medical challenges of their own. As they navigate an incredibly difficult season, they are selling BBQ plates to help cover the expenses and get through the days ahead.

It’s our turn to pour that same love, generosity, and support back into Hannah and her family.

If you’re able, please purchase a BBQ plate or make a donation. If buying a plate isn’t possible, any contribution, no matter the amount. (Info in comments)

“HUT has had a lasting impact on my journey to adulthood by connecting me with a mentor who became one of the most influential people in my life. She supported me throughout my college years and inspired my passion for giving back, advocacy, and fundraising. Her guidance shaped both my personal and professional path, and after I graduated from college, she invited me to join her team at a local nonprofit.

HUT didn’t just help me through college; they introduced me to a mentor, a career, and a lifelong commitment to serving my community.”

What a powerful day for our HUTs!

Ahlora, Schonstatt, Jocelyn, Ski-Onna, Ms. Ariel, and Ms. Ura had the incredible opportunity to speak at Valero’s United Way Galveston County Mainland Kickoff!

These young women represented Higher Up Texas with confidence, professionalism, and heart sharing their voices and showing exactly what happens when young adults are given opportunities to step up, speak out, and be seen.

We are so proud of them and grateful to Valero for creating space for our HUTs to shine!

At 18, we think we know everything.

Our future is mapped out. We have a plan.

And then life happens.

For Juan, the challenge wasn’t a lack of ambition. It was a lack of access.

Like many young adults, Juan had the drive to succeed, but limited opportunities to build professional skills, meaningful connections, and confidence.

Through Higher Up Texas, Juan learned how to communicate professionally, build relationships, and step outside his comfort zone. Those skills helped him connect with professionals, open doors to new opportunities, and ultimately land his current position at AMOCO Federal Credit Union.

As Juan puts it:

“HUT gave me the confidence, communication skills, and mindset to believe that I belonged in professional spaces.”

Juan’s story is about more than one young man. It’s a reminder that talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t.

Every day, HUT helps young people gain the skills, confidence, and connections they need to go from Hoodie to Hired.

Help us open more doors for the next generation. Your donation gives young adults access to the skills, connections, and opportunities they need to build their future.

👉 Donate today and help us move more young people from Hoodie to Hired.
