So what does a robotics guy do After finishing a tournament? Stains a Table! Interesting science tidbit. When staining a table, which is better? You can either wait four hours to re-apply stain and create a chemical bond between coats or wait 24 hours to sand and settle for a mechanical bond between coats!

I'm very excited to announce that we have a few new schools entering the mix this year and I hope that the momentum will pick up for the three that have not registered.

Please understand that every campus has some form of rules in place to handle robotics selection. Your best bet is to ask your child's homeroom teacher to see what is available.

Woot, new Basebot. I made a few changes to standard bot. It gives students the freedom to easily widen the chasis for driving multiple wheels and learning the basics of adding braces to the sides to hold bricks together by attaching vertical bracing. I switched to rims in the front for quick maneuvering. I plan to create a guide for making robots easier to function and basics of adding flippers. The goal is to broaden the horizons of kids. Maybe a YouTube channel would be fun.

I'm super duper excited ! ! Programing is coming to an elementary class near you ! O.K. almost near you. For now its coming to my little neck of woods, and hopefully we will reach out and expand into the classroom... What am I saying. Its going directly into my classroom.

May 2016 E.A.R.L.y. Tournament

Hughes Road Elementary PTO & Robotics
On May 16th, 25 teams will descend on DHS and compete for a variety of Trophies and medals. I am asking that every school stay towards the end of the tournament. This is a very special time as we close out the robotics School year. I will be expanding the awards, and only students that remain through the entire event will be able to participate.
IT IS ALL ABOUT THE STUDENTS!
DATE: Saturday, May 14th
LOCATION: Dickinson High School Vintage Gym
SCHEDULE: 7:30 Doors open-registration-set up
8:00 Tech Inspections (robots and slides)
8:30 Coach Meeting
8:45 Kick off
DIRECTIONS: 3800 Baker Drive Dickinson, Texas 77539
FORMAT: Each team will participate in 3 seeding matches. In addition to the seeding matches, top 2 scores will qualify for the finals. (one score will be dropped) Each team will be ranked from the average of the highest score to the lowest score. A Single elimination bracket will then determine the overall winner.
General Awards for the May 2016 Tournament.
Trophies for Overall performance will be handed out to First, Second, and Third Places.
Medals will be handed out for First and Second Places for each grade level.
Additional Awards
“Fast Reset Medal”. Who can compete: Students who do not receive a First or Second place medals. Rules: After each round, participants will have 3 minutes to reset their board. Students who reset their board in the correct amount of time will receive 1 ticket. Each team will have the opportunity to acquire 4 tickets (3 Seeding Rounds plus the first round of Single Eliminations). Turn Tickets In: Students will write their Grade and Letter on each ticket. At the end of the tournament, one team will be drawn and the team that has not placed with a medal will be awarded.
Trophies
Engineer Trophy (Construction of robot and how well it performed during tournament)
Spirit Trophy (Handed to the loudest school that cheers their teammates)
Sportsman trophy (The team that rocks by encouraging others).

Engineering Moment:

At the time I was maybe 5 years old, and I grew up in a house on the corner of 28th street in Dickinson Texas. After every heavy rain it would put about ten inches of water in the ditches tit kept flowing a pretty good pace. Well my dad was a carpenter and I was fascinated with damns. I even built a model once. Well I graduated one day and built a 2 foot damn in our ditch. In a matter of minutes water was up to tops of culverts five blocks down the street. Needless to say I did this many times and it always fascinated me.

I have this crazy idea of hosting an EARLY Robotics Camp

The average cost for a STEM class ranges from $200 to $250 for a half day program for 5 days. So My idea is to have a half day program that includes 4 days of instruction from 8 to 12 (Monday - Thursday) and entry into a tournament held on a later date. Each session will have 9 Students (3 students on one team). After the last session I will host a tournament for all 9 teams.

Cost??? my guess is 200.00 per student.
Grade: 3rd - 6th
