Movement isn’t just about keeping students engaged—it's a powerful learning tool.

For many students with dyslexia and other learning challenges, pairing physical movement with visual imagery helps make abstract concepts more concrete. When students move, visualize, and talk through new learning, they're building stronger connections that support understanding and long-term retention.

Part of today’s introduction to morphology lesson focused on the two types of bases: free bases, which can stand alone as words, and bound bases, which must be joined to other word parts to create meaning. By physically representing these concepts, students weren't just memorizing definitions—they were building a deeper understanding of how words work.

That's why you'll see purposeful movement woven into our lessons. It's not an "extra"—it's an instructional strategy that helps students understand, retain, and apply new learning.

Coastal Academy open house is tomorrow night! It’s hard to believe our little school is kicking off its THIRD year! I made some pretty significant changes to the format of the program for this school year, and I’m excited about the response we’ve had to those changes!

I set a rather ambitious goal this past week … updating multiple learning spaces throughout our building and doing some much needed purging, organizing, and cleaning. I’m not done yet…I’ll be back at it tomorrow morning to make sure everything is just right before our families arrive!

Today’s stats (in our building)!!
12 hours
15k steps
7 miles
30 flights of stairs
(I did five additional flights of stairs while my watch was charging.)

Calgon, take me away!! 😉

Our amazing students worked diligently for FOUR hours this morning researching the major battles of World War II. Each student was challenged to become an expert on their assigned battle! Next week, they will teach each other. Stay tuned for more if our integrated learning experiences!
