After 13 “final” drafts, the first Power Word Exploration unit — 235 pages of lessons and resources — is complete. This has been a labor of love. I’m grateful for The Literacy Lady instructional team and our students who have given me the input, feedback, and support that has made this project a reality. We’ve seen the results firsthand. Now, we have a more comprehensive way to duplicate those results.

Who said that dyslexia therapy for big kids has to be nothing but boring, repetitive drills? We could have stopped with a basic phonics lesson about the diphthongs and . “Sound clues” are definitely important! However, we were curious about the relationship between the words JOY and REJOICE, so we spent a few minutes examining “history clues” that might explain the spelling of those words.

Then, we came across the word FLAMBOYANT! Our discussion of the meaning and usage of this word led to a deeper dive into “meaning clues” using related words beginning with . Phonosthemes like are SO much fun to explore!

We are excited to officially introduce this year’s high school interns, Zoey and Addison! They are both 11th graders at Hancock High School and are currently enrolled in their second year of the Educator Preparation program at the Hancock County Career Technical Center. Zoey and Addison have already become a vital part of our after-school Literacy Academy program!

Job announcement:
Part-time Reading Interventionist for our after-school Literacy Academy program located at The Literacy Lady’s Learning Studio in Diamondhead, MS.

Minimum Qualifications:
-Bachelor’s degree in Elementary or Special Education
-Valid MS teaching license that includes endorsement in Reading (K-12)
-Five years of classroom teaching experience
-Training in evidence-based reading methodology
-Basic knowledge of characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities
-Availability to commit to working with students after school on Mondays & Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 PM

Preferred Qualifications:
-Master’s degree in Elementary or Special Education
-Multiple teachings endorsements that represent a wide range of training and expertise
-10 years of classroom experience, with the majority of that experience in elementary education
-Advanced training and/or certifications in evidence-based reading methodology
-Advanced knowledge of characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities
