Pollinators | Not Just Bees!
When we think of pollinators, honey bees often come to mind first. While honey bees are indeed important, they represent just a small fraction of the diverse pollinators essential to our ecosystems.
In the UK, we have many native bees that often go unnoticed, such as mason bees, leafcutter bees, and nomad bees. Additionally, hornets and wasps, despite their bad reputation, are also excellent pollinators when they collect nectar from plants. Even flies, often overlooked, play a crucial role in pollination.
Supporting our pollinators is vital. Planting a small patch of wildflowers, even in flower pots, can make a big difference. These pollinators, currently in deep decline, are crucial to the health of our planet.

Honey bee colonies in the United States are projected to experience unprecedented losses in 2025, with estimates ranging between 60% and 70%, according to entomologists at Washington State University.

This marks a significant increase from the previous decade, where annual losses typically ranged from 40% to 50%.

The decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate change, and diseases such as varroa mite infestations.

These stressors have led to a sharp rise in honey bee mortality, with commercial beekeepers reporting an average loss of 62% of their colonies between June 2024 and March 2025.

The consequences of this decline are far-reaching, as honey bees play a crucial role in pollinating approximately one-third of the U.S. food supply, including vital crops like almonds, apples, and blueberries.

The projected losses threaten to disrupt agricultural production and food security across the nation.

20 Years of Monarch Waystations! 💐

More than 50,000 Monarch Waystations have been registered across twelve countries and territories! This map represents locations of most of the Monarch Waystation habitats — each one a step toward helping monarchs on their journey. 🗺️

It all started right here in 📍Lawrence, Kansas, 20 years ago. The very first Monarch Waystation was registered in our own community on April 21, 2005.

Let’s keep creating more monarch habitat together!
