✈️ Cloud Base vs. Ceiling: What’s the Difference?

Cloud bases and ceilings are important pieces of information for pilots when assessing weather conditions.

☁️ Cloud Base
The cloud base is the bottom of a reported cloud layer. METARs report cloud heights in hundreds of feet above ground level (AGL), and each reported layer can have its own base.

☁️ Ceiling
A ceiling is the height of the lowest broken (BKN) or overcast (OVC) layer, or the reported vertical visibility (VV) into an obscuration.

For example:
FEW015 BKN030

➡️ FEW clouds have a base at 1,500 ft AGL
➡️ The BKN layer creates a ceiling at 3,000 ft AGL

Understanding the difference between cloud bases and ceilings is an important part of reading a METAR and making informed flight decisions. ✈️

Tuesday spotlight on the people who make it happen! 👨‍✈️

Flight training is only as good as the instructor sitting next to you — and that's something we take seriously.

Our Chief Pilot, Eric Shaw, brings over two decades in the USAF and more than 10 years as a CFI/CFII. He's also CSIP certified (Cirrus Standardized Instructor Pilot), meaning he's completed Cirrus's own training program for teaching in their aircraft — so you're getting expert instruction built specifically around the planes you'll be flying. Eric makes learning to fly feel fun and easy, not intimidating.

Whether you're just starting out or working on an advanced rating, our team at Watertown (KART) and Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is ready to fly with you.
