That's a wrap! Tomorrow is Election Day.
We are eternally grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support we have had from each of you. You have graciously hosted our signs, talked to your friends and neighbors, knocked on doors, donated your hard-earned money, shared your experiences and helped us strategize. We are proud of the professional, focused, student-and-parent-centered, honest campaign we ran. We never resorted to insults, lies, slander, stalker social media pages or bogus complaints...we always remained laser focused on the issues important to you, the voter:
Transparency
Accountability
Fiscal transparency & responsibility
Putting students & education first
Advocating for teachers
Advocating for parents & students
Making athletics more affordable
Thank you for your feedback and your input.
See you at the polls!

Our mailers went out this past week...and they're a hit! People have said they enjoyed our positive, student-focused message. Great!
One major advantage we have over our opponents is WE control our campaign and our messaging...not a huge national political party. We are so thrilled we didn't "open the door" to the drama and rhetoric politics-as-usual brings to races once candidates accept their "help" in exchange for an endorsement.
Politics and political parties should have zero say in non-partisan school board elections.
Thank you to everyone who helped us with our mailer design and who took the time to proofread the words we wrote from our hearts.
Vote Vander Haagen & Haines Nov.8

My running mate, Rhonda Haines and I politely refused any political endorsements for two main reasons: one, Dexter school board is (supposed to be) non partisan; and, two, we believe it is imperative parents and caregivers know without a doubt that we will represent everyone if we are elected...and it is critical people know we are not beholden to any political party or special interest group.
Our opponents, Alabre and Szawara not only sought but enthusiastically accepted the Democrat party's endorsement in a race they know must remain non partisan.
They don't care about being non partisan. They don't seem to mind that, though they are supposed to represent everyone (despite the fact that they were not elected but hired by the other board members), they gave up their voices, YOUR voices, to a political party. They don't seem to mind the hateful, dishonest and completely tone deaf literature being distributed on their behalf by a national political party...in a local, non-partisan race.
If you want to be represented on the Board of Ed and you want your students' best interests put ahead of peoples' political aspirations and need to hold onto power, vote VANDER HAAGEN & HAINES for Dexter Board of Education.
We are the only non-partisan, student-centered choice.

We are one week away from the election!
I have met so many great Dexter folks and answered 100s of their questions throughout this campaign.
Below you will find a recap of my positions on various issues. Please email or pm me if you have any questions. [email protected]
I hope to earn your vote November 8!
1. Students and their education must always come first. That means a stellar Dexter education should be put before all other things...special projects, political agendas and/or endless surveys and focus groups.
2. If I am elected, I will advocate for parents on behalf of their students. Next to teachers, parents and caregivers are the most important aspect of a child's education. It is the board's role to be a conduit between the community and the schools. Parents should not only be welcomed at school board meetings, they should be strongly encouraged to attend and listened to when they offer suggestions.
3. If I am elected to the board, I will work to ensure there is more transparency and accountability on the board. I will make myself available to all parents, teachers, students and staff. I will personally answer their questions and address their concerns. That is what accountability looks like. I will also work to ensure there is more transpatency on the board. No one should have to beg for any financial information regarding our schools. I will always remember the Board of Education trustees work for the taxpayers, NOT the other way around.
4. Our pay-to-play fees are too high. I will work on finding ways to reduce our fees so that every student who wants to play will be able to do so.
5. I am a firm believer in teaching students how to become well-rounded, independent, self-sufficient and productive members of a free society. That means teaching them to think for themselves and make sound decisions. I believe we can achieve that by sticking to the basics...math, reading, writing, science, history, foreign languages, computers and trades.
6. I will have an open-door policy for teachers and staff. I have talked to many teachers throughout my campaign who are "dissatisfied" with the board and the superintendent. Many of those I spoke with have said they don't feel heard. Many were very put off by how long it took for the board to ratify their most recent contract. I will always advocate for our great teachers.
Please vote VANDER HAAGEN & HAINES November 8.

If I am elected to the board, I will enthusiastically seek input and feedback from teachers, staff and parents. I will advocate for every Dexter student, regardless of their race, nationality, gender and/or sexuality. If anyone tells you anything different, they either don't know me or they are being dishonest.
