Black Music Month, The History of New Jack Swing: Week 4 The Shift to Hip Hop Soul 1993-1995.

By 1993, New Jack Swing had become so mainstream that it began to dilute. We conclude the course by examining how the genre naturally evolved into its successor: Hip-Hop Soul. The Shift: Moving away from the frantic, synthesized drum machines toward sampling classic 1970s soul records (the rise of Puff Daddy, Andre Harrell, and Uptown Records). The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul: How Mary J. Blige’s What's the 411? (1992) served as the transition point, burying the New Jack Swing aesthetic while keeping its core philosophy of singing over hip-hop beats.
