The word juggernaught comes to English thanks to a 14th century traveler who witnessed a religious procession through the streets of India. There was an enormous carriage that carried an image of the Hindu god Vishnu (whose title was Jagannath). The story was exaggerated by the time it reached Europe to tell of people allowing themselves to be crushed by the vehicle as a sacrifice to the god.
