“I’m erecting a new office, the Office of Urban Agriculture and Community Spaces, because while much agriculture is strictly agricultural, sometimes people also utilize the land to develop a sense of community. So we often see places with flowers and benches, and it’s not necessarily primarily agricultural work, but it’s land-based work.

Many people are doing all kinds of creative things in the city, and I want all those creative uses to have legal standing.”

Composting, water access and backyard chickens: Detroit’s urban farming evolution The city's first urban agriculture director, Tepfirah Rushdan, aims to help gardeners access land and water while making urban farming a seamless part of the city’s policy.

We will be celebrating Black History Month all of February with a series we’re calling “Black Food Co-op Futures” - featuring four historic, Black-led food cooperatives that have recently opened or are in late-stage development (stage 3A or later) These startups are creating Black-led food co-op history right now, before our eyes!

We’ll be featuring each startup food co-op for five days, sharing updates about their co-ops, and information about how we can all directly financially support their work to build and inspire Black-led food cooperative futures. And these co-ops will be sharing their stories here with you too - we'll be soon announcing dates/times when some of these co-ops will be going live with us on Facebook!
