Performing for the State Board of Education was a powerful moment for both our students and our department. Our students showed incredible growth, confidence, and professionalism, representing the true impact of arts education.

For our department, it was a reminder of why we do this work every day.

It was an honor to share the stage with Fort Worth, Dallas, and Duncanville ISD. This opportunity was only possible because of that shared commitment.

Way to go, Katherine Johnson Band!

Your hard work, focus, and determination are paying off, and it shows every time you step into rehearsal and onto the stage. You are setting the tone, building momentum, and proving that excellence is a choice you make every single day.

We are proud of the growth, the discipline, and the pride you carry as representatives of DeSoto ISD Fine Arts. Keep pushing, keep striving, and keep showing everyone what it means to be part of something great.

Every story of excellence starts with strong leadership. 🎶

At a recent UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest, Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy Band, led by director Kenya Thomas, earned straight 1s (Superior ratings) in sight‑reading—the highest distinction possible. This achievement reflects a clear instructional vision, skilled musicianship, and scholars who are taught to meet high expectations with confidence.

Under Ms. Thomas’ direction, scholars at KJTMA are learning more than music. They are developing discipline, focus, and pride through intentional instruction led by an accomplished musician who knows how to bring out their very best.

This is where excellence takes root. And it doesn’t stop here.

Join us in celebrating the scholars and the leadership that made this moment possible.

Two DeSoto High School senior band students, Iain Young and Matthew Phenix, had the opportunity to attend the Texas Music Educators Association Convention alongside their directors this year.

While there, they were able to connect directly with the broader music community by networking with world class performers and master educators, speaking with college professors, and even scheduling auditions with university music programs.

They also connected with recruiters from Drum Corps International, the premier national touring organization for elite marching music ensembles. Participation in DCI is highly competitive and offers students opportunities for scholarship pathways, national performance experience, and professional level training in music performance, leadership, and discipline.

Experiences like this give our students a glimpse into the many pathways available through music and the arts.

Congratulations to Freshman Artez Adams for an outstanding achievement at the Regional VASE competition! 🎨

Artez earned the highest possible score of a 4, successfully defended his artwork before a panel of judges, and was awarded a Division 1 medal for his work.

Moments like this highlight the creativity, discipline, and critical thinking that our DeSoto ISD Fine Arts students bring to their craft. We are proud to see our visual artists representing the DeSoto Difference at such a high level.

Learning looks different for every student, and that’s exactly the point 🎶✨

In Mr. Ross’ Concert Band, students are building their rhythm and timing skills using technology that provides real time feedback, allowing them to see it, hear it, and refine it instantly.

This is what happens when innovation meets instruction.
This is what student-centered learning looks like.
This is The DeSoto Difference.

Earlier this month, Cockrell Hill Elementary filled the room with energy, pride, and powerful student voices ✨

As part of DeSoto ISD Fine Arts’ Black History Programs, students took the stage to celebrate history through music, reminding us that these moments are about more than performance. They’re about expression, connection, and honoring the stories that shape our communities.

We love seeing our students shine.
